Headcanon that Shepard (Spacer background) lost his father when he was young, and when Hackett and him became close, Shepard began looking up to him like he would a father. It also helps that's his mother is with the Alliance, and her and Hackett are close friends (which could explain how she is enlisted to work on the Crucible, and not put into any dangerous situations).

N7 Month Challenge|| Day 2: Spacer Origin

Jane Shepard, age 8, had spent her morning with her nose smushed up against the window of the transport her and her parents were on, waiting impatiently to see the arms of the Citadel become visible. It was a rare occasion, one where both of her parents were together and they were going to the Citadel to visit some family friends before her mom and dad shipped off again. 

She was going to be spending a few days with her ‘Aunt Janet’ while her dad went on an infiltration mission, since both he and her mom were shipping out on the same day. Her parents were apprehensive, as this was to be the first time they would both be gone at the same time; however, Jane was nothing but excited to be spending the week or so with her auntie. 

The same auntie who let her stay up late, and had all the best toys, and never told her parents when she wouldn’t eat what was made for her. Basically, the best aunt ever. 

The week passed mostly uneventfully, minus the first day when her parents balefully waved goodbye before boarding separate transport ships. Jane and Janet spent a ton of time together, Janet showing Jane all over the Citadel and letting her explore all the nooks and crannies. They found a favorite ramen shop that they visited almost everyday, and the days went by quickly. 

The day her dad was supposed to be coming back from his mission, Janet and Jane packed up her stuff and left it by the door, ready to be quickly retrieved after the reunion. But when they reached the transport station, it was Jane’s mother who found them, with tears in her eyes. 

And that was the day that Jane found out that no one is safe in the universe, and not everyone comes home.
