No sooner has Spain put away its Christmas and Three Kings decorations than it starts thinking of dressing up in extravagant costumes and decorating stunning floats to celebrate fun and indulgence before the austerity of Lent. Historically carnival is 40 days before Easter... which coincides with the vernal equinox that welcomes spring into the northern hemisphere. Basically Easter is the first Sunday after the full moon. A delightful mix of religious celebration based on astronomy! As Easter is on a different date each year, THAT is why "carnaval " is a different date each year too.
