Evaluation (Spatial Typography)

RESEARCH AND IDEAS

At an early stage in this project brief I decided that I wanted to take a completely different approach to the brief. I decided not to explore in-depth previous spatial typographic pieces, but try and create my own style with an original concept, something I believe I have achieved.

Despite this, I felt I still needed to look into and explore possible theories behind Jam, Jam Jars and Pose, for which no doubt expanded the spectrum of Ideas I created. However, I was still frustrated with the fact that I was confused with what idea and how to progress with the project. This was, thankfully for me, sorted with the help of constant critiques and tutorials throughout the process.

Once the idea was finally settled, I then began to experiment with Jam in preparation for the final outcome. This went successfully in helping me to establish the possibilities, and to also help in establishing a possible time-scale to create the final outcomes, especially at this stage of the project when it was close to the selected deadline.

CREATION OF THE FINAL OUTCOME

With all the components in place when I came to producing the final piece, I did not predict the long time-scale that it would eventually take to create the three required images. This was because of the constant re-working of particularly the marmite photoshoot; the viscosity of Marmite made the work ‘pose’ hard to read. Despite this, I am happy that I achieved the exact images I wanted to produce.

CONCLUSION

Out of all the projects undertaken in this unit so far, I have to admit that for some reason I have not enjoyed this as much as the others. This may be because of the amount of difficulties suffered throughout the project, however this led me to ‘push myself’ out of my ‘comfort zone’, and will most likely, in the long term, improve my ability in this sort out design work in the future.

Idea

So my idea for this project is to use the concept of suspension in time, during my crit I presented this idea and everyone agreed that the concept was strong, my idea for how the type and chair interact with each other is to recreate an explosion, it can be 2D or 3D but my initial thoughts are that I should suspend the blown apart bits of chair to recreate the idea of a photograph capturing suspending the explosion in time. I should explore using dolls house chairs and also ways of suspending the bits of chair.

Suspension

My Definitions of Suspension:

-Suspending something off of the ground i.e. raised by some force, such as legs or wire.

- The force of keeping something tort or spring loaded i.e. car suspension

- Floating about the ground

- Suspending something in time i.e. frozen
