Another idea is that a raid took place in 1995 A.D. that resulted in the capture and transportation of the human zoo (like, the entire zoo. Gems and all), this was the first mission for a young man named Andrew DeMayo, who would make a name for himself by single-handedly capturing the Agate in charge of the Zoo Garrison. He was put in charge of her security til the ship they were on, the "Arc Mercy", returned to Earth, during that time, the staunch traditionalist Agate and the traditionalist Man would find a sort of kinship in each other, and over the next few months, would blossom into something more. (Yes, I'm squeezing some HollAndy into this AU.)
And by "found a kinship", I mean by day 2 of the 3 day return trip, Andy's C.O. (a gray haired woman of 55) entered the holding room and found the young officer and the captured Agate engaging in, what was officially noted as, "high intensity intimacy". The only words she said before promptly leaving the room was "unusual coercion techniques, but not against regulation, carry on."
