It's a mayfly, yes. Looks like a speckled dun. They can certainly fly long distances so you don't necessarily need to be super close to water to see them!

A tiny mayfly perched on my hand! I was originally trying to get a picture of this guy on a leaf, but he spooked and ended up flying onto my hand, where he decided he wasn't moving any more. The angle was absolutely horrible to get a picture from, so I had to contort my arm uncomfortably and lay my camera on it to stabilize everything; needless to say, it was a very taxing photoshoot. This photo turned out nice, though, and you can see all of the features of this mayfly's anatomy quite well, especially his wicked looking eyes!

Sure! It’s a type of mayfly called a speckled dun in the Callibaetis genus. :)
