Human Sexuality: A Psychobiological Case Study, was the result of a fever dream and the drunken coupling of Xenosaga, Jungian Alchemy and Apophenia. I noticed the shipping progression and maturity of Finn throughout the series and likened it to Jungian alchemical process.
You’ll need to do your own research to fully appreciate the weird-ass stuff I’ve plugged into the images (as well as your own intuition), but I’ll add some commentary to help you get started.
The first ship. The most important ship. Decomposition.
A growing awareness of his [Finn] shadow aspect. His blackest despair of love unrequited.
Wound: Scissors cut.
Attachment: A lock of Bubblegum hair
And as darkness reaches excess, it's opposite is produced.
The second ship. The ship of acceptance. Purification.
All images have a character injuring Finn, whether glancing wound or penetration. And always with a face of ecstasy.
Marceline was receptive and aware of Finn's needs. Which made Finn aware of his needs.
Wound: Marceline's open punk rocke personality.
Attachment: The red sock Marceline dropped just as Finn saw her naked.
The darkness passes, into dawn. The guiding light of the sun.
The third ship, the ship that Finn intentionally brought himself to bear.
It was experimentation and fantasy, however short, to see what it would be like. Dolls; reflection of how we ship ourselves.
Lady never directly acted towards Finn; she was with Jake at the time; Unattainable, likened to staring at the sun, trying to capture form directly. Hubris? Desire?
Wound: That time they got along when Rainicorn wore a translator
Attachment: The bag of little people. So big Finn can ship little Finn and little Lady, with no true consequence.
The fourth ship. The ship of wholeness and individuation.
Finn enters into a mature relationship, for however long it lasted.
And as it ended Finn saw himself and Flame Princess as different people, each going their own paths, rather than following each other.
Finn gains ultimate insight on people. Heroism, tolerance and desire are not enough. They must be held together by wholeness; a sense of ourselves and of others and the violence we are capable of.
Wound: The fire of Flame Princess' betrayed trust.
Attachment: The rock that let them "touch" each other.
So in the end, Finn grows up somewhat and the circle closes: Finn and PB spend time together and bond in Pajama Wars. Finn isn't seeking a relationship anymore.
Memories were made though, and a bond being slowly repaired.
