My love for Ancient Egypt has been a continual part of my life. I think I was around 8 years old when I discovered the topic and it has stuck with me ever since. I am participating in a reading challenge for the year on www.goodreads.com which involves reading 7 books from different historical periods, focusing on royalty. Since I had already read Nefertiti by Michelle Moran, I thought I would give this book a try.

At first, I didn’t really like the book. It starts off with a very young Nefertiti, so I felt like I couldn’t relate to her character. However, once the book moved to her teenage years, I found her to be a much more interesting character.

This book chronicles Nefertiti’s life from a small child until she moves into the palace of Thebes as the intended bride of Thutmose, son of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. She is headstrong and beautiful, quite the dangerous combination. I really loved the way that Friesner wrote the historical figures, it made up for some of the modern phrasing.

Overall, I thought it was an interesting depiction of Nefertiti’s life. Since historical knowledge is very limited in this time period, I enjoy reading about different viewpoints on how the historical figures were really like. So, even though I doubt some of the things actually happened and some modern phrasing, I am giving the book 4 stars.
