A+X #14 (2013)
Wolverine vs. the Superior Spider-Man
So, this one user keeps bashing Eddie Brock over what he did in his first villain appearance and what an AU version of himself did. I left this response here
I'm going to say this again: I honestly cannot stand this “character started out bad, therefore they’re always bad”. People seem to only like redemption arcs if they’re exactly like Prince Zuko’s where he was not really bad to begin with and just wanted his father’s approval.
Sometimes the characters that resonate most with us are the ones that do bad things for selfish reasons and I feel like seeing them realize they were wrong and work towards change is way more inspiring and uplifting than “they weren’t really a bad person, they were just misunderstood/sad/wanted love”. That's why I like characters like Katsuki Bakugo, Damian Wayne and Starlight Glimmer more than Prince Zuko. It's not like I hate Zuko, I just hate how the fandom clings to his redemption arc like it's how all redemption arcs should be and anything different is wrong. Not every person does something bad because they were forced to. Sometimes, they do them for selfish or just flimsy reasons. What makes them strong is looking at themselves, realizing they were wrong and striving to be better. I feel like some people miss the point of redemption arcs. The character has to do something bad first or start out bad and then develops into a better person.
Granted, redemption arcs can be done badly for several reasons. One of the worst currently is Spider-Ock’s because his crimes of rape, rape by deception and attempt at mass genocide are too great to be so easily forgiven and because it feels disingenuous. What made him actually decide to be a good guy was that the woman he raped and stalked across the nation was disgusted by his actions and he only shows real regret in hurting her. Not because he actually looked at himself and realized he was a monster.
And yet this same user seems to have forgiven Otto already but won’t even bother looking up anything that Eddie Brock has done after the 80′s because reasons.
I don’t want you guys to go harassing the person. I just wanted to vent my own frustrations.
That is a VERY odd thing to see come from Gage. The way this is set up too... I kinda get the feeling this Peter’s gonna experience some deja vu since one of the latter issues involves stopping ol SpOck here before he potentially goes TOO far.
