Stumbled across a Spingle Move shop near Akihabara underneath the train tracks. Was a nice discovery since I love this brand of Japanese sneakers made in Hiroshima. It was hidden under the train tracks with other craft shops (more sketches to come). Couldn’t resist to buy myself a pair. Was great to find them away from the usual busy places like Shibuya or Ginza.

Spingle Move W AW17 - Pitti Uomo Preview

Even if Spingle Move wasn’t the embodiment of many of the subtleties I love about Japanese culture, the sheer design and quality of its offerings would be enough to lure me into their stand. Ever since I came across the brand a couple of seasons ago, my dormant sneakerhead personality came to life: the refreshing approach the Japanese label delivers on time tested silhouettes, along with exclusive ones, is simply superb. Although its offerings are focused solely on sneakers, the result is a range of meticulously crafted styles infused with strong Japanese heritage. 

Spingle Move incorporates ancient techniques such as Sashiko stitching or indigo dyeing into its sneakers, delivering contemporary models with a very distinctive aesthetic. For AW17, besides the incorporation of traditional embroidered fabrics in an array of shades, the label features the “Deep Black” series where sneakers are hand dyed by an old Kyoto company, century-old masters in dyeing formal male Kimono dresses.

Spingle Move - SS17 Collection Preview

Besides the opportunity to rendezvous with friends and some of the most influential and inspirational people in the business, Pitti Uomo provides a fertile ground to get acquainted with some of the most interesting brands in the market. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know by now I favour what one may call “less commercial” brands - this doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t like the creations coming from major labels, but the whole universe of those who put their hearts and souls into crafting something unique, just seams much more appealing to me.

If questioned about my favourite “discovery” from the last edition, Spingle Move would definitely be a strong contender. Handmade in Funaka, Hiroshima, the brand delivers some of the most interesting takes on contemporary sneakers, featuring a revamped take on the traditional Japanese sole to achieve perfect design and comfort. Besides the sleek silhouettes and clean aesthetic we’ve grown accustomed to from the land of the rising sun, what caught my attention was the unique use of trademark Japanese denim techniques such as Boro and Sashiko, that inspired several of the collection models.

From slip-ons, to plimsoles and sports sneakers, the SS17 collection features a range of models that incorporate the very same denim used in traditional kimonos and Japanese workwear, to create exclusive designs. The indigo shades are paired in different washes, along with leather and suede details.
