Future worries.
Okay, so, wait a minute here. Degrassi The Next Generation doing disability representation in the right way by using an actress and wheelchair dancer by the name of Marie 'Spirit' Synott. Spirit Synott plays Margaret Matlin, the mother of one of Degrassi's current characters Maya Matlin.
It is wonderful to see a television program using an actor or actress who actually is a disabled person in reality and also in a role as a parent. A strong parent at that as in recent light of last week's Degrassi episode where Maya has started being bullied at school as a result of making a 'sexy' music video to start a music career of her own.
While it is unknown what exactly Spirit Synott's disability actually is, there are different sources saying she either was born with Spina Bifida or Multiple Sclerosis and either disability cannot be confirmed by myself at this time.
Spirit Synott is a wheelchair dancer and the above video is a piece called 'Grace Amazing' with her dance partner Aaron Water.
Isn't it freakin sexy and amazing?
*Note This is not the first time Degrassi has had an actress who is really a disabled person on their cast. In the original Degrassi Junior and Degrassi High series there was Maya Goldberg played by Kyra Levy who was born with Charcot - Marie Tooth, a form of Muscular Dystrophy
