Tropetember day 4 Famous AU (Sportman)
Fandom: 9-1-1: Lone Star (TV 2020)
Relationship: Carlos Reyes/TK Strand
Characters: Carlos Reyes (9-1-1 Lone Star) TK Strand
Chapter 01
"Olympic champion, first gold medal winner in sport climbing, accused of doping, in danger of losing his medal and falling from grace."
That's me, Carlos Reyes. Yesterday I was a hero in my country, Mexico adored me and wanted to throw me all the parties imaginable for winning an Olympic medal. Today, just because someone insinuates that I might have taken a substance, they want to throw me into the bonfire.
As if that were not enough, my family doubts. My parents and my sister doubt, my coach says he doesn't doubt because he is earning a lot of money with my interviews, but I know you have your doubts and so do the people who celebrated my victory, not to mention the people who simply see publications on the internet and have fun insulting someone they don't know at all.
The sports press has had it easy, I'm nobody, I was nobody before the Olympics, so it's easy to insult the poor guy they say, he takes drugs to be famous with the only thing he knows how to do.
As if being the best in the world at sport climbing was the same as sleeping with the first celebrity you meet in a discotheque or doing a good karaoke.
The conclusion for me was that the dream of my life has ended two days after starting and now my coach says that I should disappear for a while and he can't think of anything else but to tell me to go to Russia, where according to him, there is the best climbing team in the world, so I can train and improve.
He wanted to get rid of me, it was very clear, but neither of us had said it out loud, so more to stop hearing all the barbarities and avoid the stares of too many people who supposedly loved me.
Nobody was waiting for me in Moscow and while on the one hand it seemed fantastic to be totally desperate and not have the spotlight of all the press and anyone else on me, on the other hand, I was in Moscow, in Russia, I did not speak a word of the language and fate seemed determined not to make things easy for me because apparently there the signs could not be written in understandable alphabet.
For a moment I had already regretted having made that trip. There were so many places nearby that I could have chosen to hide and where I could at least read the street names.
I could have turned around, taken the next plane back to Mexico or gotten lost in some other part of the world. No matter how much the ticket cost I could have always paid with the gold medal that had given me so much trouble.
"Carlos Reyes?" a voice behind me asked.
I turned around and put down the backpack in which I had packed all my things for the trip.
I nodded and accepted the handshake the stranger offered me.
He was a young guy, similar in age to me, a smile that seemed to light up a really pretty face, green eyes that looked at me calmly. It was easy to tell he didn't know me at all, he had been told to come pick me up at the airport.
"I'm TK, it's a pleasure to welcome you to Moscow." He said with a strong Russian accent, which was normal given that he had just arrived in his capital, but I was amused all the same. "I've been asked to take you to the hotel. I have the car waiting outside."
He bent down to grab my backpack, but I was quicker and grabbed it myself.
"No need, thank you."
"Never mind. You've spent many hours sitting on that plane. Let me help you."
And he took it from my hands without asking, slung it over his shoulder and headed for the parking lot.
I followed him, in such a big place I was in danger of getting lost and the last thing I wanted at that moment was to find myself alone in the middle of an airport where I couldn't even talk to anyone to order a coffee.
"Do you want to go somewhere before I drop you off at the airport?"
"I'm exhausted, the truth is I just feel like crawling into bed and sleeping for two days."
"They say jetlag is terrible." He looked at me as I climbed into the car next to him. "Is it?"
I nodded, while making a great effort not to let it show that I was yawning.
"You've never traveled far from home?"
TK shook his head as he started driving.
"I'd really like to, I love the idea of traveling and seeing the world, but I don't think I could ever have enough money to do it."
"How's that? If you don't mind me asking, sure."
"Not at all, no problem. I come from a small town outside of here, from Moscow. My mothers have saved all my life to send me to college and now that I've finished school, I work in a hamburger joint ten hours a day, some nights and all to pay my rent, food and to be able to go out some weekends. It certainly doesn't give me enough to save for a trip."
I didn't know what to say. I thought my life had been complicated, but it had all been worth it to make it to the Olympics...despite what had happened afterwards.
How easy it was to realize that my life had been so much easier than many other people's lives.
TK drove me to the hotel, left everything arranged with the receptionist and handed me my room key.
"You have breakfast and one of the meals of the day included." I thanked him and was finally able to retrieve my backpack. Something told me that if I let him, he would carry me up to the room. "If you want, I can take you out to dinner at a place I hope you like. Do you like vegetarian food?"
"Not especially."
I had spoiled his plans, but he quickly disguised it.
"That's okay, I know a burger place too, it's a very famous chain here. Let's just say it's a must when you come to visit Russia. I'll pick you up in four hours."
"Make it five. I want to take a shower before I go to sleep."
I plopped down on the bed and almost fell asleep as soon as I put my head on the cushion, but every time I closed my eyes I saw again all the TV news talking about me, the drugs I had taken and all the other lies.
I wasn't just tired from jetlag, but from all the sleepless nights I'd had because of the hell I'd put myself through during those days.
I got up, I didn't want to spoil the first day of that adventure and jumped in the shower, cold, as cold as possible to clear my head and let TK take me to his favorite places for dinner that night and the following nights.
I invited him, he protested every time, but I felt he deserved to be invited. I was grateful that he was doing all that for me. He helped me go to the stores, he interpreted whenever I asked him to...and when I didn't ask him too. So the least I could do was to offer him a nice dinner.
On the third day he asked me what I was doing in Moscow.
"I came to train."
"Training? You're sporty."
TK looked me up and down after opening the door to the coffee shop where we were going to stop after making our last sightseeing turn before starting my training the next day and burst out laughing.
"What's wrong?"
"Let me guess. You have the body of a guy who does martial arts, but then I don't know what you're doing in Moscow."
"No, mine is... it's something else." I hesitated about telling him the truth, telling him who I was and seeing if he knew my story or not.
TK was the first nice, sincere person I had encountered in the last few weeks. He was being better to me than my family or any friends I thought I had ever had.
I was afraid of what he might think of me, I was afraid he wouldn't want to hang out with me anymore those days. Not only was he an incredible help in a country where he didn't understand anything, but I could almost feel that he was becoming a new friend.
TK ordered a coffee for each of us, in the few days we had been seeing each other he had already learned what my favorite coffee was and I didn't have to ask him to put it in front of me, hot but not too hot, just the way I liked it.
"Come on tell me, you're the first sportsman I've ever met. Tell me, what's your specialty. Is it said specialty?
"You can say, if you want."
"So, what's your sport?" He took a sip of coffee I did the same and took a moment before answering.
"If you want you can come and watch it. I have my first practice tomorrow."
He nearly choked on his coffee when he heard that, as if no one had ever invited him to anything.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. Sorry. I'm fine. It's just... It's nothing. I'd love to go, I've never seen a practice. Well in high school I played soccer but it wasn't anything major and I certainly didn't consider myself an athlete. I don't have the physique to do it."
I looked at him, I couldn't help it, I noticed him. I had already realized that he was TK was handsome, he was the perfect man in almost every way. What I didn't understand was how he could say something like that about himself.
"What do you say? You could do any sport you want. I'll tell you what, come with me tomorrow and I'll show you what I do, but you do it with me."
TK agreed and so much he agreed, he looked happy as a kid with new toys. He asked me question after question to try to find out what I was up to, but I, who was having a good time, really good time and for the first time in days was not thinking about what was waiting for me when I got home; I didn't say anything, I told him it was a surprise.
The problem was when the next day, at the door of the gym where the climbing team was waiting for me, we were met by a dozen journalists who had found me.
TK parked on the corner or rather, I yelled at him to stop his car as if in a Fast and Furious movie and scared he almost pulled the car up to the curb.
"What's going on, are those reporters?"
"They are and they're coming looking for me." TK turned to me and looked at me. He didn't ask, he didn't say anything, but he said it all with his eyes. "Take me away from here and I'll explain everything."
