You shield my eyes from the police lights. We run away, but we don't know why."

I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights
They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
Sometimes, I wonder if the world's so small
Can we ever get away from the sprawl?

a study
Every year or two I end up listening to this song again, still loving the fuck out of it, but knowing myself better and hearing more in the song. I used to listen to it on loop, I put effort into memorizing every word, singing along. It has always made me want to dance and laugh and cry. It feels like tragic joy and euphoric heartbreak, being reckless and free no matter what was stolen from you.
This year I hear a LOT of myself in it. And it's the first time I've seen the video - god, I even dance like her. How did I not know I was a gay-as-hell city girl this whole time? Hindsight is 2021.
In the end, no matter the isolation, the things lost and given away before I was even born, and all the voices demanding me to just be simple... I still figured myself out. I even found my kind. I found them.
I'm gonna eat this pizza and feel some feelings. I hope y'all have a great night ❤️
