Why Auto Experts Discourage The Use Of Spring Clamps?
Springs are important components of cars. The suspension springs determine various performance aspects like load limits, handling, and clearance of over road obstacles. People are readily aware of the suspension springs due to its utter visibility. The brake springs which are responsible for disengaging the brakes are more hidden but play an important role in safety.
Speaking of springs, significant number of car owners are using spring clamps on their suspension springs. These clamps hold down certain portions of the spring together to lower suspension height. The lowering of the suspension height is motivated by aesthetics. Many people think that smaller gap between the wheels and the wheel arcs look pretty.
Something must be said of lowering suspension height as a form of performance upgrade. A lower ride tends to give a car better aerodynamics. However, most people that use spring clamps are definitely not using it to boost performance. The clamps are used on vehicles not meant to be very fast. A compact car meant for general commute will see no tangible benefits from a lowered height brought forth by the clamping down the suspension springs. In fact, it will only make traversing over common road obstacles more difficult.
The spring clamps does nothing in terms of performance while putting the springs in greater risk of getting damaged. The way the clamps are installed interferes with how the shock absorbers and springs work together. It also puts unwanted stress on the suspension springs.
