song du jour: the xx.vcr
today is a big day for the cushing clan as the youngest member of the clan reaches the age of twenty. that's right, we are all on the north side of twenty now. happy birthday cheek!
where does the name 'cheek' come from? thank you for asking. my brother, pj, and i were in middle school and enjoying our post-school activity of watching mtv's spring break (we were cool like that). in this particular case, we were enjoying jerry spinger's 'springer break' or whatever it was they so wittily called it. sean (as he was known at the time) was at best in kindergarten on that day, and happened to be in the room with us. springer was having a contest where scantily clad girls (the parents weren't home, if you couldn't guess) had to spell out words on a shaving cream covered glass with their posterior and their partners had to guess what the words were. this is where nicknames are born, apparently. one girl had to spell out the word 'cheek', a not so thinly veiled reference to the body part she had to use (oh so witty mr. springer). when her partner correctly guessed the word, she ran around the stage yelling 'what up, cheek?!' over and over as one does in such a situation. of course, it took all of about five seconds for us to start yelling the same sentence to sean, and thus, the nickname was born and he has been cheek ever since.
cheek tried to introduce me to this band quite some time ago, but unlike his nickname, they took a little while to catch on for me.
what up cheek?! hope you had yourself a great birthday!
