E got me flowers for my birthday :’) And not cut ones, but a live little flowering plant in a pot! He has one himself and I’ve admired it and called it a “purple Christmas tree” before, so he left this on my chair at the office today – and since I have the day off from work, he took a picture and sent it to me.

#squish e #made a schiacciata con l'uva and brought it to work today #and so i made the coffee for us both today although it was technically his turn #and he came up to my room when it was done and closed the door and we had a Kaffeeklatsch #and we talked about the finer points of italian pronunciation #and our own passive vs. active language knowledge and learning goals #and also lots of random religious stuff #christian mythology as represented in the divine comedy vs. jesus christ superstar etc.#he knows so much about this stuff i was just happily absorbing it #omfg i can't express how much i love having a friend at work that i see every day #who is the kind of person you can have conversations like this with! ahhhhh #office life #he also solicitously inquired if the flowering plant he gave me is still alive (it is!)#(yes i'm feeling mushy today. appreciative of my friends)#(gonna send some VMs to a few other friends tonight. i love them)#(i'm a lucky fool to have such wonderful people in my life)#officemates

#squish e #friends #office life #as i observe this tendency in myself over the years #i have developed various theories that might account for it #the one i'm increasingly leaning towards is this:#i suspect i may well be on the autism spectrum #not to an extreme degree but more than most folks #bc it's just such an OVERWHELMING RELIEF when i find someone who says exactly what they feel #without concealing the truth behind layers of polite lies and overdone consideration for others #lbr: that shit just CONFUSES tf out of me #but ppl who are blunt and direct are the best #i never have to waste time second-guessing their intentions #officemates

#squish e #is adorable #we're still at the stage where we feel like we need an excuse to text each other #and can't do it 'just to say hi'#so some days we don't interact at all bc neither of us can think of an excuse #but yesterday he clearly felt the urge to interact #bc first of all he walked by the door of my office in the morning to get water #while i was trying to set up a video-transcription assignment i'd been given #and i was holding the huge fancy headphones up to my ear to see if the audio was working #was vaguely aware that he was there but didn't look up bc i was busy #so then two mins later when he got back to his office he texted me 'You look like a DJ'#and we chatted a bit and then it trailed off #but then later in the day i was down the hall putting the headphones back in the tech closet #and i guess he must have seen me bc i got back to my desk and found a text from him:#'Looking for stuff to steal?'#i had to sass him a bit at that point #like 'Do you not have any work to do today so you're just spying on me?'#but tbh it's just So Nice to have ppl in my life who pay real attention to me #all my boys here at the office are so good at that #it still blows me away when andrew casually makes a reference to sth i said days earlier #or bill tells me a vignette clearly inspired by a thought process he just had about sth i'm doing #it's like... i am an Actual Presence in your life?!? you notice me and devote brain power to me??#WEIRD. i love it.#i wonder why i have such issues around believing that i Actually Exist in the lives of those around me #also last year i posted sth funny on facebook and alex at the old office commented 'Come. Back.'#and bill responded to the comment saying sth like 'No. We like her. We're keeping her.'#and i felt so WARM AND FUZZY!!!!! i love all my coworkers (near and far) so much!#and it makes me so happy that they seem to like me too!#personal #office life

Another vignette from yesterday: I told him I wanted to see a pic of his wife. He started going through his phone.

Him: “I’m trying to find one that doesn’t have too much cleavage.” Me: “Dude, I’m not gonna perv on your wife, don’t worry.” Him: “You sure? She’s hot.” Me: “Well, maybe I will then.” Him: *proudly shows me a picture that is obviously ALL about the cleavage*

As a follow-up to this post from yesterday... this guy continues to be an absolute sweetheart. Wtf. I am so pleased to discover how right I was in my suspicions about him. He carefully nurtures a reputation around the office as a sarcastic asshole, but he messaged me today just to apologize for not being able to chat much because IT’S HIS BROTHER’S WEDDING DAY. Like, dude, it would have been completely valid to not message me at all during your entire holiday, let alone on the day your brother’s getting married! But he did it anyway. And then, despite that, he still sent me a further update of all the animals he’s seen since he messaged me yesterday. 😍😍😍

I may not have a lot of skills in life, but one I do have is choosing friends well.
