"we believed one of our greatest strengths was our ability to do pretty much anything well."

sitting in an interview chair again reminds her of her time on next gen, and other survival shows before it. she's had a lot of practice, so it's comfortable now.

she looks at sukyung expectantly, then she asks the first question:

why did you and your partner choose this song?

"a significant factor in our choice was that easy is performed by a subunit in wonderland, which required us to adapt less of the choreography to suit a duo. we wanted to make sure the performance still looked full and complete with only two people." nayoung nods. "easy also has a solid rap section for me, interesting choreography, and vocals that sound nice but aren't incredibly difficult. jueun and i are both aware that we won't be the main vocals of sr media's future group, but we believed one of our greatest strengths was our ability to do pretty much anything well. i think easy helped us prove that point."

what did you realize about yourself from working with your partner?

nayoung is quiet for a moment, considering the question. did she realize anything new? she has to come up with something, right? surely nothing won't suffice.

"maybe that i can put together a quality performance without being so critical and uptight..." nayoung chuckles. she can do it with jueun, anyway. she isn't so sure it would work with anyone else in the project.

do you believe you’re inferior, equal, or superior to your partner in terms of skill?

nayoung smiles. is this a trick question? are they expecting her to throw jueun under the bus or shower her in empty compliments?

ultimately, nayoung doesn't have to do either. all she has to do this time is be honest.

"in terms of skill, i think i'm superior, but i've trained significantly longer than jueun, so i think that's to be expected – necessary, even." if she and jueun were equal in skill it would quite honestly be embarrassing. she has more to add, though. "that doesn't necessarily mean i'm better than her as a whole, though. there's more to being an idol than skills. i'm aware my personality is a bit..." she pauses, chuckling a little as she searches for the words. "abrasive...jueun is really the opposite. i think the average kpop fan would have trouble finding reason to dislike her. so whereas i might draw fans in because of the quality of my performance, jueun might draw people in with her personality. both are important."

compared to the previous ranking you gave your partner, where does she land now?

"to be honest, i don't exactly remember where i ranked her previously," nayoung admits. somewhere near the middle, maybe? the bottom half? "but i'd put her in third now, i think. behind myself and yuji."

why is that?

"i previously made my ranking primarily based on skillset and talent, but i think jueun would bring harmony to the group offstage, even if her skills aren't the most spectacular. i remember i ranked eunae above her before, but..." nayoung pauses, unsure of how honest to be. honest but respectful and restrained, probably? "eunae is like if you combine my personality with yuji's skillset. in that regard, you could argue she doesn't bring anything unique to the group, even though she's very skilled. i don't think any of the girls in sr media can beat how friendly jueun is. yuji and i are both...very ambitious. yuji is friendly in her own way, but doesn't always get along with everyone all the time. i think it would be difficult to make jueun dislike you. at the very least she'll be stubborn about giving you a second chance."

jueun was stubborn about getting to know her in some ways, after all. she didn't let nayoung's attitude or reputation intimidate her out of getting to know her on a deeper level. she appreciates it.

do you think you can work with your partner long-term?

"of course," nayoung answers easily, almost taken aback that sukyung even feels the need to ask. surely everyone knows that jueun is easy to work with? she's curious if sukyung asked jueun the same thing, and what she would say. likely yes as well, right? if only because jueun is so cooperative herself.

"jueun was very easy to work with."

with that, the interview comes to a close. nayoung feels more nervous now than at any other point. what will they use her answers for? did she say the right things?

she'll find out eventually.

-- how was working with your partner?

"wonderful," yuji says immediately with an easy smile. it's not a lie. while yuji stresses over most performances, for once she felt at ease. perhaps it was the creative control that hanna so freely liberated to her, but she was also open to listening, and spoke up when needed. she also took care of the theatrics and thematics, which was a huge weight off of yuji's shoulders. "i think we both knew what we had to do. i was a little worried at first, but...i'm satisfied with the end result."

-- why did you two focus on this skill?

"we went with something we were...more strong in. we were supposed to uplift what we're good at while working with one another." yuji recalls, head tilting to the side absentmindedly as she thinks about the preparation process. "hanna doesn't partake much in the creative aspects of things, but i do-- where as i don't focus too much on the more...thematic and visual aspects. hanna shines in that regard. choosing a vocal centric performance felt like it'd be more...natural to show off those strengths there."

-- what did you learn from your partner?

yuji blinks slowly, considering with her expression turning thoughtful. "to feel more comfortable in front of a camera." she says quietly. "and to learn to trust in your partner. i think she has an eye for things that i don't-- aesthetics, what looks nice, what fits. i learned a lot aesthetically, from her. and i think she did a wonderful job with what we had."

-- do you think you could work with your partner long term?

yuji hums, and this is the first question she takes more than a couple seconds to speak up about. "yeah." her head bobs in a nod. "i could. hanna's adaptable, and she puts in effort. she's earnest, willing to do her part."

-- do you believe you're inferior, equal, or superior to your partner in terms of skill?

do a performance that complements each other's strengths. yuji excels in a couple of aspects, and she'd likely say yes, she's superior in these regards. but hanna excels in a way on camera yuji feels like she's struggling to achieve. "equal." she states simply, nodding her head with a smile on her face. "i think what we excel or struggle in, we cancel each other out-- or rather, we fill in the gaps left open. that's what a team does."

yuji's meticulous and serious about this performance the moment it's given. she doesn't miss the subtle nudges or queues-- the pinpointed looks and even mention of her name. yuji has to straighten up and get focused.

she's paired with hanna, which yuji spends maybe all of five minutes being a little offended about before she realizes it could be worse. at least they had the foresight to mention that she looks awkward on camera before they revealed the pairings. hanna shows exceptionally well on camera, so yuji takes note of that. it's to help, complement where you lack. it's not a dig. so yuji plasters on a smile and gets to work.

at least hanna's nice. it makes falling into the ease of preparing for the performance simple for her. musical creativity? hanna doesn't bring much to the table there, but yuji's fine with that. it's an example of something yuji can take a hold of and make for the two of them; brainstorming comes easy enough. the older trainee is already working through potential options and directions to go.

they bounce through a couple of different ideas, noting what they lack and what to focus on. dancing is pushed to the back burner for now, so yuji focuses on other aspects. instead of title tracks, they go for b-siders, and at least yuji is familiar with wonderland's discography to have a few to pop out to her. once they've decided on their choice-- jazz bar, yuji gets to work reworking the line distribution and production changes, while hanna focuses on thematics and a proper visual for their performance. she presented to tell a story through the song, put their acting skills to use!

they go for something a bit more musical theatre esque, the set up as close to a jazz lounge as they could get with minimal props. it sets enough of a scene-- and hanna does an excellent job of selling the idea to yuji. as someone who worked at a jazz lounge before, yuji finds that settling into the role shouldn't be very hard for her at all. she's happy with it, and pleased with the direction hanna took with it.

it's nerve-wracking, though. just as they talked about-- standing on opposite sides of the 'bar' they've created. all in all, yuji's happy with how hanna's put it to life. it's easy to fall into the rhythm, and when the instrumental starts-- she sways idly with the music, glancing over at her partner with a soft smile.

yuji starts vocal scatting at the beginning, bringing them into the song as she makes a motion to glance over at hanna in her peripheral. they're supposed to be shy, watchful and longing while they inch closer and closer to each other throughout the performance.

they switch off verses, the two of them glancing over at each other when the other isn't looking. small, casual little steps to the side-- until their distance is shortened. from hanna, to yuji, then back to hanna. a hand sliding on the 'bar-top' then back, hesitant. longing.

did you slip in through open doors and sit down just to look at me like that every day when our two eyes meet i want to stop singing and draw closer to whisper oh nah

it's a song about yearning, and yuji finds herself falling into it seamlessly. hanna's a good actress, and yuji finds herself matching her energy.

"i feel i love you," she sings, soft and ethereal. "oh, i love you. oh, i like you. do i know you?" she hums, glancing over at hanna, the softest smile on her face.

another step. distance lost, and now they look like they're standing intentionally by each other, their eyes slowly gravitating towards each other and away from their audience.

their eyes meet, and they move into the final chorus. they harmonize this part, voice blending in together, another step closer.

as the song comes to an end, the scatting makes a return. hanna starts this time, and yuji follows up after, both of them humming together the final notes until the instrumental fades off.

every time nayoung is set to perform again, she can't help but think it's been too long.

this performance still isn't as grand as anything she did on next gen, but it's just as important, if not more so – this will influence whether she debuts or not. it's important that it's perfect.

thankfully, her partner, jueun, has been incredibly easy to work with. she was very receptive to nayoung suggesting easy, and kept a good attitude throughout all of their practice sessions. nayoung must, unfortunately, admit that their trainers might've been onto something when pairing them together. she didn't feel the need to be as harsh as usual in the past weeks. they worked together well.

part of nayoung is a little concerned, though. even though jueun agreed to performing easy, she thinks the song naturally suits nayoung better than jueun, though jueun has done an excellent job of conforming to the concept. ever since the ceo of delta entertainment called her a poor leader for making herself the center of attention on the first season of next gen, she keeps it in mind. is going with a concept nayoung suits opposed to agreeing to jueun's ideas just another example of her inability to compromise and consider others? she hopes not.

she hopes the sr media staff see it more as a strength of jueun's to fit any concept. jueun is pretty and naturally cute to some degree, but also elegant, and nayoung knows she hasn't had the chance to show off this side of herself as much. nayoung hasn't thought for a moment that jueun seems uncomfortable or unsuited to a more sensual concept.

nayoung's main purpose in suggesting easy was it being more convenient to adapt its choreography to a smaller group, and its lack of belting vocals. while she and jueun can both sing, she knows they won't be the main vocals of their future girl group if girls like yuji and eunae debut with them. she knows her strength is in dancing, and more recently, rapping, but also in her ability to do anything asked of her. jueun is similar, and easy is a well-rounded song.

she lets jueun take charge of their styling for the most part, because she can't argue with the girl's eye for aesthetics. she shares her opinions, of course, as nayoung always does, but by the time they've decided on outfits and makeup nayoung is satisfied. they look good. they'll perform well. they'll prove they deserve their spots in sr media's new girl group.

the performance goes smoothly. they sing, dance, and rap exactly as practiced. nayoung is sure she could find moments to nitpick if given the chance to review the performance, but in the moment, that's not what she focuses on at all. she captures the song's energy, executes the choreography to a t, and never forgets about the audience they're performing for.

when it's all said and done, she can't help but hope for more performances in front of bigger audiences. surely she's close. surely this time she'll make it. right?
