Whumpril 27 - Rival Turned Caretaker

She’d been true to her word, returning with a whole leg gripped in her teeth, dropped on the ground at his feet beside the small fire he’d been nursing while she’d gone out to hunt. Then, turning her back on him, Ahuska flopped heavily to the ground and began to clean the blood off her paws and muzzle while he prepared his cut.

Five noticed the way one of her wings sat a little skew, while the other fitted smoothly against her body. He said nothing as he carefully skinned the meat, his hands finding comfort in the familiar task, but he saw when she shuffled, when she tried to fold the wing in but some of her feathers refused to tuck in properly. He saw when she bent her head around to try and smooth things out with her teeth, he saw when she flinched, and sighed, and turned back to her paws.

He turned back to the meat, cleaning it to his liking, piercing the flesh a few times and pressing into the grooves a handful of thin slices of the pungent and flavourful wild bulbs he’d foraged earlier that day. All in all, a humble effort, but cooked just right with a little native rosegourd on the side it promised a hearty feed and a very welcome break from the nutrient bars in his pack.

As he set the meat over the fire, Five looked back over to the wolf, and took a good half minute before the words stopped choking up in his throat.

“Thank you.”

Ahuska lifted her head to stare over her shoulders at him. It’s nothing. Just keep up your strength.

“I..” he hesitated when she turned away again, only to snap her gaze back once she realised he wasn’t done.

Five frowned to himself, and looked down at the ground. “You’re welcome to share it with me, if you wished to shift…”

It would be a waste of energy, she shut him down swiftly. Right now, like this, I am content.

Five’s lips pinched tight. “It might help you straighten out those feathers, too.” In fact, he was quite certain it would, knowing how readily little anatomical kinks could be straightened out by a werebeast changing form. He’d seen Thirteen’s feathers get stuck in the same way.

I’ll be fine.

Silence fell between them again, and Five spent some time gently stoking the fire.

Ahuska stretched out her body, spreading her toes pleasantly before resting her head across her forelegs and letting her wing settle partly open. She was reluctant to fuss with it any more, now that Five had drawn attention to it. It was nothing, honestly. It would straighten itself out on its own, maybe even after a short sleep.

“You don’t have to be uncomfortable,” Five said, quietly, when it was obvious that Ahuska had simply resigned herself to her misaligned feathers.

The wolf rumbled. Rich of you to say that to me.

Five felt his cheeks burn. She had every right to feel the way she did, of course, but surely she could see that he was trying. That he accepted all the consequences he’d wrought upon himself. That he harboured no ill will toward her for the loss of his arm, and had no reason to ever wish harm upon her again. More than that, he had reason to want to see her well.

But that was all too difficult to articulate.

He half-squinted, staring into the fire.

“I’ve tended to Thirteen’s wings many, many times before, with his feathers twisted up just like yours are. You know one of his shapes has wings arranged much like yours?”

I do.

“Of course. Then you’d know I’m not lying. I’m not making things up to try and muscle in on your good side.”

Mmm. Not that you made an entire career out of behaving like that…

“Yes. I did. I was Intel’s best at getting on people’s good sides. I had half of Kaas wrapped around my little finger, and the other half in debt to me. And so what. So what? The Intel I knew is dead, and I don’t care to see it brought back to life. I don’t care much for anything but bringing Thirteen home. I’m depending on you, and when I see you too stubborn to admit I could help you rest more comfortably it…” he threw up his hands, not knowing how to finish the sentiment, only knowing that there was a very strange flavour to his frustration on the matter.

Ahuska huffed, lying in frustrated silence of her own.

She didn’t want his hands on her. Every time he was close enough to touch her, every time he did, it made her skin crawl. It made her wolf’s mind want to rise and take control of her thoughts and decisions, to protect her from the visceral discomfort she felt around the man who had held her captive.

But somewhere in his dithering, he had a point.

She could virtually see Thirteen rolling his eyes about it.

With another grumble, deep and exaggerated to be sure Five got the point, she stood, stretched, shuffled about, and flopped back down, this time with her irritated wing spread out toward him. Already she was tense, her muzzle wrinkled, her eyes fixed on him fiercely, loaded with judgement and mistrust.

Show me, then, Mister Expert. If you don’t make it better I’m stealing your roast.

I have more thoughts. Obviously it’s a trope to have friends/family ask that kind of thing, and there’s the added context of Hen knowing Tommy from before but what did they expect him to say? Yes, it was a teasing, light tone but what if he’d essentially said they were just messing around?

I really do see why they favoured the Bobby acknowledgment scene over it, much as I love it. Also, also, also, I do wonder how much worse the other side would have been with Tommy being the dreaded ‘sassy’ word. Other words exist. He shut it down in a way that wasn’t rude but stopped it there.

(I don’t know. Had a truly terrible week and this has snapped me out of it with lots of half baked thoughts and inarticulate opinions.)
