St Cleer’s Day
Source: English Heritage
Today is St Cleer’s Day. This somewhat bad tempered saint, when he encountered a group of hurlers, playing their sport on Craddock Moor near Liskears in Cornwall on the Sabbath, turned all the participants into stone as a punishment. The local village became known as St Cleer thereafter. This is a neat, if faintly absurd, explanation of the presence of a series of impressive standing stones, known as The Hurlers on Craddock Moor. The neolithic structures have some form of religious significance, the meaning of which is now lost. Whatever these pre-Christian survivals denote, the magical powers of a particularly intolerant saint are unlikely to be the cause.
