The Monster I Became
"No."
"Come on, Nightmare--"
"I said no," barked the immortal as he turned to walk away.
"He still loves you! He wants you back!" Blue pleaded, walking after him in desperation. "If you would just apologise--"
"APOLOGISE?! Apologise for WHAT?!" Nightmare roared as he whipped back around, singular cyan eye blazing like a forest fire in July as his maw formed into large fangs and his fingers grew thorny claws. "Why should I apologise for the MONSTER that I became, Blue? Why should I have to apologise for feeling pain? For being hurt by the fact that Dream left me to guard our home, our sanctuary, alone?! No, no… I will not apologise to him for what I have done. I will never apologise to anyone for the atrocities of my past. Not… not when no one ever apologised for making me this way. For making me the villain of a story that wasn't mine to begin with."
Nightmare looked down at his hands, clenching them tightly, before hugging himself as he turned his gaze to the side.
"Besides… If none of it had happened… I would still be the guardian of a tree, all alone in the forest with no one but Dream and the tree for company, and that… I think now that I know what I didn't have, well, that would be the worst punishment of them all."
And seeing the sorrow in Nightmare's eye light as he looked up, Blue realised that after everything he himself had gone through…
He couldn't help but agree.
