Ok I’ve been DMing for about 2 years now, and the #1 best trick I am only just getting the hang of is buckwild NPCs. Your players are here to have fun. Lore is good, well-crafted mysteries are great. But nothing is as FUN as a loony rich little old lady who befriends you and gets you into secret events through her personal assistant Roderigo, or a dog-sized purple dragon magic shop owner the hoards heartfelt trinkets, or a hag who’s very creepy but also just a little bit of a smug know-it-all gossip. Lean in. The crazier the better.

Excited about my concept for the head of my Astronomer’s Guild/Renegade Transmutation Wizard faction leader: Zandir Blathe, and older half-elven man who has clearly enthusiastically pursued experimental magic, and lost an eye and a hand in the process. Undeterred, he now has an enchanted glass eye (it can’t see but it can cast either Detect Magic or Identify.) He also has a homunculus familiar: a mechanical hand named Sparkles (his niece named it, and it’s a very accurate name after all so he likes it) that helps him with somatic components and the like. He is a bit of a coot but kind in a serious sort of way. Can’t wait for him to meet my party!

and of course the villainess: the Contessa Bridgedira Valentine

ok choosing to do an urban noir setting for my new dnd campaign was the Correct choice, if only because I can name sections of my notes things like “Case 1: Where are you, Miss Twinkletoes?”
