HURT (i don't think i'm pretty) - Layto
This was a project I concepted back in what,,, November? December? Of 2025? it has been sitting around unfinished for a WHILE. This was mostly due to the fact that I was not confident in my ability to render the finished piece to my liking. As pretty as my older rendering style for mecha is,,, it becomes cluttered and muddy. It is too shiny and doesn't have a very clear look to it. I don't know how to explain it. IT WAS JUST TOO MUCH.
Over the past couple of months I have been DESPERATELY wanting to change my rendering style. I finally took that leap and "studied" (read "as stared at their works for hours") some of my favorite mecha artists to try and figure out what they do when it comes to rendering!! Both artists I studied create adult content so I can't share their usernames due to that - Adults are more than welcome to ask me who those artists are privately! I do want to give credit where credit is due.
Anyways, after a lot of staring and yapping about what I think the processes are, I think I figured it out!! Of course I did it my own way so it's not one to one (Also because there is no guide from them on how to render like they do LOL), especially because I wanted this to be my own take on the style and have my own process! This style is MUCH faster than my last style and overall just looks cleaner!! I am very happy with this experiment and I will be making this my main mecha rendering style moving forward, especially since I will continue to refine it and develop my style further.
This is only HALF of the completed project I have planned. I have a second half of this which will feature Shadow X!! The two pieces will be pieced together in the end to make a full canvas with some special little extra details added! However, this piece alone took me over a month of consistent work since I had to chip away at it for only a few hours every night after work - while also taking some much needed breaks to work on other projects and enjoy other hobbies and my free time.
I look forward to slowly working away at the next part of this!! I'm hoping i can keep the two separate canvases rather consistent!!
Also yes, using this song AGAIN. I still love it a year and a half later.

My Final Touches definitely pull my pieces together I find BUT, I did want to show the unshaded and un-pretty-ified version of this to really show off the rendering!!
I Still need to find the perfect colors for rendering on his purple-ish blue plating!! It was a bit of a struggle and I haven't found the perfect combo,,, In the end I settled for a yellow highlight color with a neon blue overlayed on top of that to make it not as jarring color wise!
I still don't know how I pulled this off I'll be honest,,, It was fun and I'm excited to see where I go from here!!

Been working with a new Chibi Style as of recent!! It's been a fun way to just be silly, especially with Mecha characters!! RAGHHH, Sonder and his boyfriends!! Yes,,, he ends up with all 3 of these guys! They're in a poly relationship and the dynamic really works for them!! I've done a lot of exploration on how their relationship works and how it even came to be! I won't dump all of that info here,, just for simplicity sake.
After Sonder's MESS of a love life before these three,,, yeah he deserves a few boyfriends who shower him with affection. I would love to draw these 4 together at some point!!
Nebulous/Flash Vector
Oh my GOD. Guilty pleasure ship. They work out so well together but holy shit man, it's perfect. They both quiet and cautious and aren't very open and out there about their feelings but when it is brought up,,, things just fall into place. These two end up keeping their relationship pretty quiet and even when they officially court each other they don't make a big deal out of it!!
Midnight Zone/Reverie
This is an OC ship with my friend @/mystfire!! GODDD these little sillies, I love them!! We haven't expanded much upon them, especially because I'm still fine tuning Reveries backstory but GUHHH, we're getting there!! One day we will yap more about them and figure everything out,,,,
Nebulous & Sonder
Oh these two. I could yap for hours about them. Their backstories are SO intertwined and it's SUCH a mess. Back in January of 2025 these two were created together,,, they've always been meant to be intertwined and it's become so much more than that.
To keep things short,,, Nebulous is tired of Sonder being a simp and has to do things to make him realize that he is not interested.

An Ex-Space Explorer and Researcher back on Machina. Modified his frame to be able to reach the stars, a dream which he ultimately achieved. Grew up well off and excelled in the Academy alongside Sonder, later becoming work partners with the mech and exploring deep space of his ship: The Star Trails. Lost a part of himself with the destruction Machina.

Machina
Machina would also be home, but from the moment Nebulous came online he felt a desperate longing to explore what lies beyond their skies. This longing lead him to pursing a career in space exploration, traveling the nearby sections of space to gather samples for the scientists stationed on Machina. He found thta he had the right alt mode to be successful in the field but it still required modifications. While uncomfortable and painful at first he got used to the added weight and additions to his programming. He begain training and going to the needed lessons to be able to truly begin his adventure.
During this time he meets Sonder who is a curious case. The most blatant point being that he was a grounder in a program for space exploration. However, Nebulous quickly noticed thta despite this drawback, Sonder was determined to reach his goal of getting into space. This determination intrigued Nebulous and his own quiet personality caught Sonder's attention as well. From that moment on the two became close and even developing feelinsg for each that were never acted upon.
After decades of learning and training the pair are finally tasked to begin their adventures. They first start off in large research groups. This is to ensure that they continue any neccessary training and are better prepared to do their own journeys without guidance. They do this for centuries, picking up any odd job they can for whatever money they could earn and so they have the experience to prove they were ready.
The day comes when they offically graduate form the programming and are allowed to begin their own line of work. During this time Sonder buys his own ship - The Star Trail - just for the two of them. So begins the next step in their life. They have fun, spending long hours together and exploring space as they ahd always dreamed. Nebulus grows quiet fond of Sonder during this time, hopelessly pining despite their shared feelings. He focuses on his work, using it as a way to avoid ruining thinsg with Sonder.
Nebulous finds himself often collecting samples in open space thanks to his alt mode. Sonder doesn't seem to mind, as long as he can watch him navigate the star scape. Nebulous lets Sonder take the lead on any planets they visit in return. They find themselves spending a lot of time in open space, returning to Machina to deliver never before seen samples for the scientists before quickly returning to the stars.
Lost in Space
Things change when they return from an exploration with the intention of going about their normal routine. However, any transmission they send to Machina is bounced back. They hasten their return only to be met with the site of Machina being destroyed. Nebulous is horrified as he stares at once was his home, his entire life. As he processes what their means, what they must do to survive he forces himself to push down the grief. He must focus on their survival. There was nothing left on Machina for them.
Nebulous takes charge, leaving behind Machina to begin travelling open space, far beyond what either of them had gone before. Sonder does not agree with this, resulting in the first argument of many. Their friendship begins to fall apart. Nebulous closes himself off, not allowing Sonder to know much beyond the surface. It hurt sbut Nebulous must process his grief in his own while making sure they have a chance of surviving.
Centuries pass of the apir aimlessly wandering. They only survive by taking shifts. One would be in stasis, preserving their energy while the other stays online, recharging when they can and absorbing what little food they can from the surrounding space. Nebulous tends to be the one online most of the time despite what it does to his frame. He navigates space as best he can, stopping on planets that appear to have what they need. Fuel for themselves and for The Star Trails. He tends to avoid any section of space which has life for their own safety, not sure if anyone could be considered friendly.
They get their lucky break. They enter the Milky Way Galaxy and quickly come across Earth. Despite Nebulous' hesitation he takes his chances and begins the process of entering Earth's atmosphere. However, due to their low fuel and general disrepair of The Star Trail, things do not go as planned. And thus, they crash onto Earth's surface. Close enough to Mowtown to draw the attention of Jun's team.
Earth/Sealing
Once on Earth, Nebulous makes the decision to split off form Sonder. Their relationship had fallen apart. They were no longer friends, they had grown to hate each other. While Nebulous mourned what they once have he is also relieved to finally be away from the other mech after centuries of traveling space with him.
Nebulous does not care to keep up with Sonder. He takes to the skies, leaving the crashed ship and his tattered friendship behind. He finds the food he needs to survive and he begins to explore, searching for anything that could explain why he had been drawn to this place.
He gets his answer when he finds fellow Metal Cardbots on Earth. However, finding out that they had been captured and sealed within the Metal Breath by a human left him horrified. This he avoids the team as long as possible. It is futile as he easily draws attention to himself with his speed and altered alt mode.
He is horrified to learn that Sonder had been sealed. He did not feel bad for the mech, but was rather horrified that someone like him had even been sealed. Nebulous vows to never be caught. It becomes difficult once Jun's team actively tries to find him and put a stop to his adventures. He managed to avoid them for weeks, becoming quite elusive due to his speed and ability to lay low and hide himself away. Neither of the fliers of Jun's team can keep up with his alt mode which was designed to help him travel space. However, his luck runs out when they realize that if his wings were to be damaged he would be unable to escape.
He is cornered, one of Fleta Z's arrows lodged in his wing paneling, forcing him to be grounded and unable to escape. After a difficult fight he is finally sealed. In the end he gives up, especially when Jun utilizes Sonder and the fact that his ex friend knew so much about him. His resentment towards the mech only grew further.
Once captured he is found arguing with Sonder often. It is not uncommon for him to excessively go on patrol to avoid the mech and the rest of the team. Unlike Sonder, the rest of the Metal Cardbots do try and befriend him. He doe snot accept their advances, brushing them off and keeping to himself. He prefers to be alone anyways.
He hs the freedomto patrol but with one rule that can not be broke. He can't use his alt mode. Under no circumstances can he take to the skies and feel the wind whipping past his frame. Blue Cop had reasoned that his alt mode was unusually large and faster than anything you would find on Earth. Nebulous complies surprisingly. But he misses the skies and the stars, for now he has to watch from afar.

Shipping
Nebulous is shipped in his canon compliant story with Flash Vector.
He didn't expect to develop feelings for the quiet mech but things just fell into place in regards to it. Following a confession from Flash Vector, caused by Sparkbit, the two begin officially courting and bonding.

Nebulous and Tailslash had a secret relationship on machina - mostly to keep it hidden from Sonder - however, unfortunate circumstances result in their separation. One Earth their get their second chance and reunion.

Nebulous was created back in January alongside Sonder! He got a reference in June of 2025 but I was not happy with his design in the slightest, it had been rushed to make sure I had him somewhat designed for Art Fight. For the past few months I have been itching to redesign him and the time finally came! This is his old reference:
Nebulous has and always will be my primary MCB Sona! When I first created him he was always intended to be exactly that. Additionally, he was always mean tot be intertwined with Sonder in some way. Over the last year his story has expanded greatly and I finally have him pretty much complete!
Weapon: Starcutter
An space motif engraved Scythe that has a long, jagged blade. Reaches chin height on Nebulous.
Ability: Pulsar Slash
A powerful slash which creates energetic projections that follow the arc and path of the scythe's attack. Upon contact creates a powerful wave of energy that overwhelms a Cardbot's systems.
Ability: Galactic Shield
A slash that creates a rift like projection of space that acts as a forcefield shield within the effected space. Can only withstand medium power attacks before being destroyed.

An Ex-Space Explorer who was work partners with Nebulous. Grew up well off and wiggled his way into the Academy, becoming one of the first Grounders to graduate and explore space. Develops feelings for Nebulous while working with himonly to have his interest unrequited. Has some hidden history he wishes to ignore - illegal street racing and hookups with the mech known as Nito.

Machina
Sonder had a family when he was created, quickly being chosen by a rather well off family. He grew up getting a good education and being able to make himself look as he pleased. He did a lot of mods to himself when he was the equivalent of a teen.
He never knew what he wanted to do career wise. He was always a little lost when it came to that. He knew he didn't want to be some noble or work with other mechs in a buisness state. He found his calling when he met a representative from the Space Academy. He listened intently to how the mech explained what they did and what they were looking for when it came to students. Sonder was hooked despite not meeting the qualifications - he wasn't a flier.
He strives to not let that stop him, he woukd prove everyone wrong and usher in a new era at the academy, even if it was the last thing he did. His parents choose to support him, being able to easily afford the Academy and just happy he finally found something worthy to do with his life. Space explorers had a good reputation and they made a lot of money - exactly what his parents wanted for him. So, he enters the academy, quickly being accepted due to the strings his parents pull for him. It starts off rough at first, struggling to fit in and not quite understanding a lot of the content - it was made for fliers, not grounders.
He doesn't let that stop him and he tries his best. His lucky break comes in the form of Nebulous. The quiet mech caught his attention and he caught the eye of Nebulous, a perfect match. Nebulous helps Sonder understand the content and works to get more material that would benefit a grounder in the Academy. Throughout this time of close proximity, becoming close friends, Sonder develops feelings.
Nebulous never reciprocates, and Sonder never confesses, becoming endlessly frustrated and confused about what their relationship actually is. What did those long nights if studying mean? What did those nights of cuddling mean? What did those looks mean?
When he was a teen he had heard of the Street Racing that would occur on Machina. He never allowed himself to get close, not with how his parents looked down on the mechs that did race. But, circumstances were different now. He needed something different, a way to work out his frustrations. He begins to sneak out, watching the racers at first before finally entering himself into a race and winning.
He meets a mech named Nito after his win, gaining his interest quickly. They develop a Friends with Benefits relationship, Sonder getting to forget about Nebulous while he spent time with Nito and Nito getting a nice place to sleep during those nights. However, with law enforcement cracking down on street racing, this indulgence doesn't last long. For fear of losing his place in the Academy he puts racing - and Nito - behind him, focusing on studying again.
Within a few years Sonder graduates with flying colors, becoming one of the first grounders to graduate from the Academy. And explore Space.
He is given his first assignment: Explore Space. Officially paired with Nebulous the two take to the stars, collecting samples and performing tests, both getting to live out their dreams. This dream doesn't last long though. . .
Lost in Space
Sonder was distraught upon Machina's destruction. Returning to their solar system and seeing the remains of their destroyed home breaks Sonder. He fights with Nebulous, begging him to explore the ruins in hopes of finding someone - anyone - who could have survived. Nebulous refuses, the mech becoming cold and closed off towards Sonder - more so than before. Sonder realizes that Nebulous wasn't the mech he thought he was and the resentment begins to grow.
Over the next 4000 years the pair wanders space, barely making it between fueling stops. The universe is cold and desolate and while they knew other species inhabited it, it was rare to come upon a species which had what they needed. Things become dire when the two run out of food and vow to start a schedule. Only one would be awake at a given time, searching for signals in the vast stars that would help them continue. The other would fall into stasis to conserve fuel for when they are able to obtain more. The exhausting plan continues for centuries.
While Sonder is in stasis Nebulous comes across Earth. Signals are sent to their small ship and Nebulous makes the decision to land on the planet. However, due to the disrepair of their ship and low fuel the landing is far from soft, crash landing on the outskirts of Mowtown.
Sonder wakes up after it occurs, confused and dazed. When he searches the small ship he finds no sign of Nebulous, becoming angry as he realizes he had been abandoned by his friend in a strange new world. Sonder pushes through and begins his new life on Earth.
Earth/Sealing
When exploring the new planet he was now trapped on he was surprised to find such an advanced civilization. It worked well though, finding that his alt mode fit in with the humans vehicles. However, his unique color scheme resulted in many humans being curious about him. He grows to dislike their attention, especially when they sit or lean against him to take selfies.
While he would have loved the attention in any other situation, this one wasn't wasn't the right kind. He still craved Nebulous's attention more than anything.
He receives it but in a negative way. Nebulous had stuck around Mowtown as well, apparently taking over the skies and drawing his own kind of attention. He begins to tail him, wanting answers for the abandonment but never receives it. Anytime he approaches his ex-friend they fight, Nebulous leaving before they can ever talk.
His fights with Nebulous grab the attention of Jun and his team, leading to his eventually sealing. While he was able to out speed most of the ragtag team he found Blue Cop, Wild Guardy, Fleta Z and Shadow X to be particularly hard to lose. The two grounders were speedster frames as well and could keep up with him most of the time while the fliers had the advantage of taking to the skies and avoiding the need for roads.
He is eventually cornered after various escapes, having trapped himself in the shipping yard much to his dismay. He had shaken them in the city but Shadow X had followed him while cloaked while he found somewhere to cool down. In turn, he is sealed by Jun and becomes a part of the team.
It takes some time for him to become adjusted, not liking the rules and patrols he was forced to live under. However, when their attention turns towards Nebulous who had begun to draw too much attention to himself, he finally started to integrate into the team. He assists them in his sealing, knowing more about the mech than anyone else.
With Nebulous now on the team thinks heat up. He finally has the chance to talk with him but despite his attempts, Nebulous always escapes. The flier tended to patrol and avoid Sonder as much as possible. The only time he is able to speak to him is when they fight, usually ending in them both being sealed in the Metal Breath or sent out to patrol different areas.
Eventually Sonder moves on from Nebulous, finding company with the rest of the team. As time progresses he grows close to Shadow X and following that; Sparkbit and Red Blitz. The four become partners and Sonder begins to heal, finally having found the Cardbots who love him for him.

Sonder is shipped in his canon compliant story with Shadow X, Red Blitz and Sparkbit.
The four click really well and they get to enjoy the times of peace that come with Earth. Sonder is able to shed his resentment for Nebulous and move past the sadness that he carried since the destruction of Machina. He is turn becomes happier, indulging in races with his partners and embracing their love for him.
Sonder is also shipped with Tailwind who belongs to my friend @/ feralneuroticism.
Not much can be said about this pairing due to the fact it still needs some work! However, it takes some time for Sonder to finally break through Tailwind's walls. They eventually become a couple after some incidents,,,
Sonder is also shipped with my OC Nito.
However, his relationship is short lived and doesn't go far beyond friends with benefits. Sonder indulged in street racing during his time in the Academy for a time. However, he eventually leaves that life behind because he doesn't want to risk his future position in the company.

He is often mistaken as female due to his color scheme,,, especially by the humans. When he is first found by Jun, the boy is under the belief that he is female, only to be very shocked when he is not.
His weapon ability is "Sun's Strike" : Exploding Bullets upon Impact
He is eventually getting a canine design as well!
