for @vxctorx because it’s bothering john a lot.
He didn’t think it would turn out like this. Actually, he never did think anything about it, after all that he had to do to raise a daughter by himself, juggling a day job and a couple of sides that was to run on cases with one consulting detective and then blog about it at the end of the day. Maybe it was precisely because of this that he thought nothing would ever develop from this relationship with Victor Trevor, no matter how fresh and different it was from those in his past.
But John recognized jealousy from anywhere.
He noticed some little things, the way Victor looked at him as he was firing away his deduction. The intimate way when they talked and touched each other. John had never thought of anything about them, because he supposed he had been the same with the detective; but it seemed so different when watching as a third person. He knew that they had known each other since university. Of course Sherlock wasn’t always friendless, he would have at least a best friend before John. Or were they best friends?
The more he thought about it even as they sat in his home during dinnertime, the more uncomfortable he felt. He drew in a long sniff, pushing his dish forward. He had only taken two bites before he lost his appetite. He glanced behind to where his boyfriend was rocking Rosie to sleep, and then back at his left hand, which was tapping restlessly at his thigh. Calm down. Ask calmly.
“-----you and Sherlock used to date, I heard.”
