in retrospect, it's quite interesting that the premise of ep 6 of dp (two rivals getting lost somewhere together and making it out of that place) happened so early in the series..
i guess you could expect that kind of scenario to be a kind of push that brings the two characters closer together or show that they are able to work together really well, something that happens later down the road in the anime to allow for constructive development, but it wasn't the case at all with snst. it was quite the opposite actually.
in fact, all their scenarios of what i would call "forced proximity" ended up "backfiring" to some extent, and showcased how much they clashed. ep 6 of dp ended with satoshi's declaration that he would never lose to shinji specifically (he felt strong emotion against this specific person, and even takeshi had a visible reaction to shinji's words and takeshi was usually a pretty chill and understanding person), and the tag battle was yet another case of them being paired up and having to team up, and it was.. certainly a turning point on many levels. again, you could expect a setting like the tag battle to make them "get along" and show their teamwork but it was a narrative setting used in another way! (it showcased their differences and the ways they drifted apart in so many ways)
what can i say, it's peak. i think it's interesting that scenarios you could expect to happen later down the line in the anime to make the rivals become friendlier towards each other or to showcase their ability to work together happened early on, and were narratively used to showcase their inability to get along and their clashes. and yet, it's not like it was completely negative either, because we could see shades of better possibilities, in a way. after all, they managed to get out of that forest together (shinji specifically went back to check on satoshi at the time), and they won the entire tag battle together (despite the fact that they didn't really feel like a team, unlike the others). makes you think that they'd able to reach greater heights if they were willing to work together. which they did, many years later.
Do you ship it?
Paul/Ash (Pokémon)
I ship it!
Neutral
I don't ship it
I don't know the characters
aka Shinji and Satoshi
reason: Classic rivals to lovers, Ash showing Paul through out the series how to be a better trainer and to care more about Pokemon beyond just their base strength, Paul's a real piece of work (and I mean this in the best and worst ways) too and seeing fan media where he's really grown and changed as a person after we catch a glimpse of him really turning a new leaf in the last episode he'd appeared in years back is really satisfying.
