The journey had been an anguish. It had been a short one, yes - well, short if one compared it to the many weeks on the Great Sea, ever traveling to the East, to the country of the white people - but the waters had been rough and angry. Cacicanà had feared a hurricane would come to drown them all, even though the winds had been colder and the rain had been more lashing than back home. A hurricane had not come, but the journey had been miserable nonetheless.
And now he was standing here, barely dried, for his guards had been ordered to take him to the queen immediately. She seemed to be curious about him - just as he himself was curious about this queen. He wondered whether she would be anything like the caciques home, or like the king of Spain. He carefully kept his eyes on the ground, having learnt not to be too proud in the presence of these white men.
