"Aw look at this! You are a true artist, Sammy. I should frame this." She hugged the youngest boy, he could be so adorable. "Tell your siblings I love their presents too, okay?"

It hadn’t been a great afternoon. Nadine was kind of used to arguments, and starting them, and being involved, but this time around, she actually felt bad. There was something off about the way that Billy reacted, and so after he had stormed off, she had made the great decision of deciding to follow him outside, and an attempt was made to apologize. And maybe she shouldn’t have left when he’d asked, but she wasn’t expecting to end up shoved to the ground.

And it’s not even the shove that’s all that bad, because she can handle that. It’s the big wave of emotion that comes with his touch. She doesn’t get specific thoughts, but she just gets everything that he’s feeling in that moment, and it’s overwhelming. She doesn’t realize that tears are brimming in her eyes, but it’s really no shock. This happened sometimes.

“Fuck you, dude.” She doesn’t really mean it, but she ended up with his anger, too.

There’s grease in her hair, a smear of dirt thick and cloying on her cheek, , and a string of bruises running the course of her neck, her arm, one thin leg. This time the long trip out of Arkham and Gotham hadn’t treated her kindly – hours of running, walking, a few hours curled up in a truck bed to keep from being seen – but Mary Dahl is nothing if not resilient. She keeps walking.

If Harvey Dent finds her he’s going to kill her. That much is a dissatisfying fact. He’d been breathing down her neck even as she’d crawled her way under the asylum’s fence, and though it was truly a carnival of errors – enough to drive even that damn clown even further round the bend – she can’t go back yet.

She stops. A tiny voice, the crunching of footsteps on gravel. She’d been walking not on the path, but adjacent to it, to keep from being completely lost, but now she draws herself away from it, back towards to overbrush. She watches, a little ghost fallen straight out of hell. Waits.

Darcy smiled at the young boy as he got the flour from the pantry. She was enjoying their little afternoons together and now they were baking dinosaur cookies because Sammy loved them so very much. “Thank you, you are getting taller! Next time, you’ll be taller than me.”
