But I did! I prompted you by saying: I don't know what's going onnnnnn! Hehe. :) Tell me the story!
“I’ve carried this watch with me every single day,” he said, as William’s eyes flicked down to the watch and back up, “As the most precious gift…” Arthur had to pause to try to maintain control of his voice, but he could feel tears prick at the back of his eyes, “…from the person…I love…more than anything else in the whole world…” It was his turn for his voice to break as he waited for William’s response, everything finally laid bare like it should have been a long time ago.
He knew there was no guarantee of William’s reaction. He liked to think that William had the same feelings towards him given all the little moments and casual touches that hadn’t been necessary and felt like anything but casual. Arthur remembered the soaring jump his stomach would do and the warmth that would flood his chest every time William would make an excuse to run his fingers down Arthur’s arm, or flash him a smile while not-quite-but-oh-so-totally looking at him.
But part of Arthur always managed to come up with a reason to write off any additional intent in William’s gestures, afraid of losing what rare friendship he did have. Not to mention what William must have been thinking about him for all those months he’d been gone. Yes, he was reconciled to whatever William might come back with, at this point just happy to have been given a chance to rectify his biggest regret, no matter the outcome.
Arthur watched as one emotion after the other found it’s across William’s face as his friend was left utterly speechless at Arthur’s confession. And as William continued his stunned silence, Arthur received his confirmation. Anything they might have been before was either a mistake or now too late. Which was fine. It was his fault anyway, and simply William being alive was more than he’d thought possible.
Arthur looked down and nodded. ”I’m…I’m sorry,” he fumbled, shoving his hand back in his pocket, “I thought…I should have…” But he stopped abruptly as he felt William’s hand close gently around his wrist before he could completely return the watch to his pocket.
He stopped, heart pounding at the electric heat of William’s skin against his. He looked up, eyes almost wild with hope. And he knew he’d been lying to himself about how much he really wanted the answer he barely dared to consider.
William’s eyes met his and for the first time, were they quiet. Without saying anything, he leaned over and gently kissed Arthur, who felt his universe suddenly expand to infinity and close in to nothing more than the lingering taste and feeling of softness of William’s lips against his as William sat back up.
William smiled, half-amused at the dazed expression on Arthur’s face , and also for the first time in their reunion, his smile was no longer empty. “Yeah, you should have told me that the first time,” he said.
Arthur laughed, nervous, jubilant, and so wildly happy he wanted to shout. ”I really should have, shouldn’t I…?” he said.
