Featuring Steele & Easton ( @ohsimtastic ) // Based on THIS prompt list, #26. Technically, this fulfills the prompt. This could easily close out the series or.. I could keep it going *shrugs* Let me know what you think please!
They showered together before turning in for the night, both so exhausted that they quickly fell asleep. It had been a long day on the road & it was was well after midnight wehn they snuggled in. Their room was now pitch black & silent. Steele couldn’t help but wonder as he drifted off if they were the only guests staying there that night. With the remote location & the lack of cars, it wouldn’t have surprised him.
Some time later they were jolted awake by a loud thud from the other side of the room. Easton started to sit up but decided instead to sink down lower under the blanket. “Wh-what was that?” he asked in a loud whisper.
“I don’t know.” Steele tried to look around but couldn’t see anything. The door still seemed to be shut but in the darkness, it was hard to tell. He carefully slid out of the bed & reached for his phone from the bedside table. Quickly he clicked on the flashlight & shone it towards where he thought the sound had come from before then turning it towards the door. The chain was still pulled across so he knew they were safely locked inside. “I don’t see anything. Maybe it was in the hall.”
Easton had the blankets pulled up tight, stopping just below his eyes so that he was mostly hidden. “Well?” he snapped. “Go look then.”
“It’s fucking 2 a.m. & I’m in my boxers. I don’t have my contacts in & all I’m armed with is my phone. Sure, I’ll go check,” he shot back sarcastically. Hesitantly, he headed towards the door. As he started to reach for the lock, he noticed his own hand was shaking slightly. “This is fucking stupid,” he hissed, pulling his hand back & instead leaning his ear again the wood. He listened hard.
“Well?”
“Shhh!” He quickly shushed the other man. “How the fuck am I supposed to hear if you’re talking?”
Easton pouted but stayed quiet as he watched him, still in his cozy hiding spot.
“Nothing.” He looked back at him & shrugged. “Maybe the clerk was doing some kind of nightly rounds & dropped something. Whatever it was..”
“Whatever?” Easton interrupted, not liking how he had worded that.
“Whoever,” he corrected himself. “Whoever it was, they’re gone now.”
“Can you check?” he asked nervously before quickly adding, “Please.”
Steele sighed loudly, looking at the door as if it were a longtime nemesis of his. He didn’t want his boyfriend to see his nerves so with another deep breath, ready or not, he unchained the door & pulled it open. First he poked only his head out to look around. The lights in the hallway still shone, hurting his eyes until they fully adjusted, & he couldn’t see anything amiss. After feeling a little more confident, he stepped out just a bit to have a better look. He felt silly for being so damn scared. Shutting the door as he stepped back in, he looked at Easton. “See? All safe. Nothing to worry about.”
Easton snorted. “You were just as worried there, big boy.”
“Hey, at least I didn’t send you out into the hallway in your undies.” Feeling more at ease now, he started towards the bed. “It must’ve been something.. Shit! Goddamn..!” He growled, bending down to grab his toe which had met with something solid on the floor. He knew the nearest piece of furniture was a bookshelf on the wall behind him so nothing should have gotten in his way. Again he flicked on his phone’s flashlight & shone it at the ground. Curiously, he eyed the object. “A book. But..” He looked back at the shelf where he saw a very obvious gap now between the others. The one on the ground looked older than any of its mates, which was saying a lot for how aged they obviously were.
“A book?” Easton asked, finally coming out of his hiding place enough to sit up, craning his neck to look. “How the hell did it fall off the shelf by itself? And did you kick it that far?”
“No, the damn thing didn’t even move. My toe is still throbbing.”
The book lay still at an open page.
To all those who enter, please beware,
No one escapes his ghoulish stare.
For if you choose to brave the night,
You’re surely in for an awful fright.
Many have entered but few have fled,
From this home of Drayville’s dead.
Here in this place of horror & pain,
Safety you will not attain.
I plead to any who may want to live,
And for you, this warning I want to give.
Steele knelt down to pick it up. As he got closer, the words on the page came into focus, He read through it, a strange look on his face.
“What is it?” Easton asked. From across the room, he could see it was a page filled with only words so he didn’t know what could be holding his boyfriend’s attention.
Featuring Steele & Easton ( @ohsimtastic ) // Based on THIS prompt list, #26. This is the shortest of the bunch. Enjoy!
It was still some time before they found a hotel to stop at for the night. “This place is a fucking dump,” Easton sighed as he stood outside, looking up at the very old building.
“I’m sure it’s… historic,” Steele attempted to make it seem not so bad as he pulled their bags from the trunk. They looked to be one of the only cars in the dark lot. “Besides, it’s the only place around for god knows how many miles. It’s here, it’s cheap & it looks clean enough on the inside. Let’s take what we can get, babe.”
He handed Easton the dull silver, old fashioned key. A now yellowed keyring, that looked as if it was once bright white, showed the number 39 as it hung from the end of it. The blond inspected it closely with a frown before following his boyfriend inside. When they opened the door, Steele walked in & dropped the bags on the aging carpet. The wallpaper was peeling in the corners & the furniture would have all been considered antique now. The room itself looked clean but everything in it was very outdated as if it had been in there for many decades. “Let’s get a shower then get to bed so we can get back on the road early.”
“Good plan. The less time we have to spend here, the better,” Easton mumbled, locking the door & tossing the key on a small table against the wall. He examined the room, slowly walking through it & inspecting nearly every inch. “Is this…? There’s a VCR in here.” Looking over his shoulder at his boyfriend, he finally cracked a smile as he pointed at the old black box.
“Damn,” Steele shook his head, trying to hold back a laugh. “Now this is class. We may just have to come back here for our honeymoon one day,” he joked.
In honor of the season & in hopes of motivating myself to write more, I reblogged some Halloween style prompts earlier today. I used a randomizer tool to decide which list & prompt to work with & ended up on this list, prompt #26 :) I used Steele & Easton ( @ohsimtastic ) on this one! This story either is an AU or it predates any children & their marriage as they are merely boyfriends here.
I will be posting what I have done so far tonight. It fulfills the prompt but if there is any interest & I feel that I have the ideas to see it through completely (because I suck at scary haha), I may continue this into what I would consider a full short story! So.. let me know what you guys think :D And even if it goes no further, I do hope that you enjoy & have a safe & happy Halloween
They’d decided to get away for a few days, to leave their responsibilities & all of their worries behind. Without a plan or true destination in mind, they grabbed an old road map & set off on an adventure - a quiet road trip for two. They found themselves avoiding the main highways in favor of the quiet backroads. They felt freer on the open roads, more removed from the world & a hell of a lot less rushed.
When the day turned to dusk, they stopped & grabbed their favorite fast food then found a spot to watch the sunset while they ate. Everything felt perfect & peaceful in that moment.
As he tossed their trash into a gas station garbage can after topping off the tank, Steele called back in the window to Easton. “Why don’t you look for a hotel close by for tonight?”
Settling into the passenger seat with his candy bar, the blond pulled his phone out of his pocket. He was cursing under his breath almost immediately after unlocking the screen. “You’re fucking kidding…” He continued to try different apps before locking the screen again & tossing it into a cupholder.
Steele looked down at it as he slid in behind the wheel. “That was quick. Find a place already?”
“Nope.” He popped the p dramatically, giving him a look of frustration. “No service. We’re in the middle of nowhere, remember?”
“You’re the one who wanted to escape the world,” he shrugged with a playful grin, starting the car even though they had no clue where they were going.
“Yeah but this whole ‘a road trip will be good for us’ thing was your idea,” his boyfriend reminded him.
He pulled away from the gas pump, stopping & looking both ways down the empty road. “Which way?”
Easton looked at him, a bit unsure. “We don’t know where anything is. Maybe we should go back inside & ask someone.”
“No, that guy’s fucking creepy. He looked like he wanted to kill me so he could keep you for himself. Or maybe he found you so pretty that he wanted to skin you alive & wear your skin,” he teased.
“Oh Jesus,” Easton rolled his pale blue eyes, chuckling softly as he too looked around. “Well we just came from that direction & I haven’t seen any hotels or anything so… Left,” he pointed.
“Left it is,” Steele nodded, turning onto the street & heading off.
