Callie/Arizona (Grey’s Anatomy)
Stef/Lena (The Fosters)
PSA: Everyone should watch The Fosters on Netflix
It’s about an interracial lesbian couple and their mix of biological, adopted, and foster kids.
Stef and Lena, the moms, are an amazing, supportive, and loving couple who do face their own relationship issues but always come back to how much they love each other. They got together 10 years before the beginning of the show after Stef divorced her husband Mike after coming out as gay.
Mariana and Jesus are the twins who were adopted officially 5 years before the beginning of the show.
The show starts with them fostering 16 year old Callie and 13 year old Jude after rescuing them from an abusive foster home.
The show is constantly dealing with important and relevant issues. They’ve covered the broken foster care system, messed up immigration laws and the way immigrants are treated in America, suicidal tendencies, corrupt police, internalized homophobia, sexual assault and trauma, the lack of lgbtqia sex Ed, TBI’s, and many more important topics.
The show finds the right balance of making these issues real without being grossly graphic (looking at you 13 Reasons Why) and without being triggering (however everyone’s trauma and triggers are different and this show does deal with many heavy topics so be careful while watching).
They also have multiple characters of colour, sexual orientation, as well as transgender characters, one of whom was a healthy, romantic relationship with the main character.
Basically this show is about love and fighting for what you believe in. The main take away is “DNA doesn’t make a family, love does”.
Also if you watch it and like it, there is a spin off called Good Trouble that is set after all the kids graduate college and is about Callie and Mariana moving to L.A.
