Stacie is a marine biologist that surfs in her free time
Emily is a photographer
one day, when Emily is walking along the beach, shooting pictures of the approaching storm clouds, she spots a lone surf board, tumbling through the waves, but no rider in sight.
the waves are huge and angry, and the board just floats there, lonesome. She goes to take a picture of it, when a few feet away, a woman breaks the surface of the water, gasping for breath-- just in time to be crushed by an unapologetic wave.
Emily frowns, waits-- because, shouldn’t the board be attached to the rider? Like to their ankle? That’s a thing, right? The woman surfaces again, gasping and coughing and as Emily looks through her lens, she zooms in and focuses enough to see the panic on her face.
She’s drowning, Emily realizes, and it’s with that thought that she’s slipping off her shoes and placing her camera on them before she bolts for the water and dives in.
the waves are harsh and the current is strong, and for a moment, she thinks she might have bitten off more than she can chew, but she manages to keep calm and go under as the waves come. She reaches around and comes into contact with another body.
eventually she’s able to wrap an arm around a slender waist and swim back to shore. she’s exhausted by the time she finally gets there, but she’s pretty sure the woman isn’t breathing. so she does mouth to mouth and within a few minutes the woman is coughing up water and gasping, the prettiest green eyes Emily’s ever seen shooting open.
The woman kind of just stares up at Emily who’s hovering over her with a worried expression as she works to catch her breath. For a moment, they’re both quiet--eyes studying each other, before the woman finally speaks. “Am I dead?”
“No, why?” Emily’s frowning in concern, absently pushing a few strands from the woman’s forehead.
“Because in the water, you looked like a mermaid-- of course that could have just been the lack of oxygen, still-- you’re beautiful. I’m Stacie, and thanks for saving my life”
and Emily just blushes profusely and introduces herself.
they sit on the beach for a little bit while Stacie regains some strength. she’s lowkey bummed because that was her favorite long board.
by the end of it, Stacie has asked Emily out, ending their conversation with, “I’d like to be conscious the next time your lips are on mine.” and then winks and Emily’s knees go wEAK.
