IMO: Why the premature end for NZ television shows?
Don't quote me on it but as far as New Zealand drama goes, there hasn't been a proper ending to a drama series since Outrageous Fortune (in 2010) as far as I know, but why?
I decided I would bring this up on the back of the cancellation of the hit New Zealand comedy-drama Step Dave on Monday, presumably due to the lead actor getting cast in the pilot of an American TV Show titled 'Toast". At least there's a valid reason for this but others haven't been so lucky, Nothing Trivial is a prime example. Luckily for the fans of Nothing Trivial they made a petition and successfully got an ending that wrapped it up, in the form of a tele movie, others aren't that lucky. As an Australian I don't get to see all the kiwi drama shows but the ones I have seen have been really good and ended prematurely. In the case of Go Girls, the first four seasons had the same cast and was going well but the fifth season had a new cast but kind of connected to the previous ones (like Skins) which didn't end up working so well although I personally enjoyed all five seasons, Go Girls was cancelled after five seasons and no definite ending. Other examples include The Blue Rose (although the end of the first season wrapped it up it had potential for a second season). When will they have enough faith to keep a show going till it truly ends? Realistically Go Girls could have ended at four and be absolutely fine but given that they decided to stick with it for another season and then let it go isn't really that fair. Let's hope that the same thing doesn't happen to Westside and 800 Words for the sake of the future of New Zealand comedy-drama. Let me know your thoughts on this subject.
