A tragic love story. A timely AIDS allegory. The ultimate in body horror. Whatever can be said about David Cronenberg’s brilliant version of The Fly, it stands proudly next to The Thing and The Blob as one of the truly great horror remakes of the 1980s.

I don’t think anyone was surprised that it won the Oscar for Best Makeup. The transformation scenes are still gut wrenching to this day.

The Fly was released on 15 August 1986.

The film had first been proposed in the early 1980s, when producer Kip Ohman approached screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue with remaking the 1958 version (which was based on George Langelaan's 1957 short story). When studio executives, read the script, however, they only agreed if financing could be secured from other sources.

Mel Brooks was approached, and agreed to produce, only with a script by another writer. Walon Green was brought on, but no one was satisfied with his version, and Pogue was brought back on to the project. David Cronenberg was approached to direct, but he was involved with Total Recall and had to pass. Robert Bierman was hired, but during preproduction his daughter was killed in an accident and left the production (Brooks had agreed to wait 3 months, and after that time, released Bierman from his contract). By then, Cronenberg was free to direct, and agreed, but only if he could re-write the screenplay (Cronenberg has claimed that only one sentence of Pogue's script remained, but insisted that they share credit, since Cronenberg would not have been able to write the screenplay without Pogue's work).

Jeff Goldblum was cast after a number of other actors declined, and Geena Davis (then dating Goldblum) was cast at Cronenberg's insistence.

The Fly was a commercial and critical success, with many reviewers citing it as one of the few remakes that's better than the original. Stephan Dupuis and Chris Walas received the Academy Award for Best Makeup.
