Both Comedy Central and Adult Swim provide a great hub for idiosyncratic adult animated series. Through the years many shows have come and…
Triptank has a special place in my heart. I literally pitched this topic so I could write about it. When I first got to community college (2013) they actually had cable in the dorms and when I first started hanging out with the close group of friends I still have today, we would stay up until 4am-5am watching comedy central regularly. My classes were usually around 3-4pm, so I had a very messed up sleep schedule for most of the time I was there. Triptank was just one of those dumb shows always playing in the background on TV late at night. Despite how mindless of a show it is I really grew to appreciate it later because of the nostalgic feelings it gives me. Watching it transports me back to the uncomfortable couches of the community college dorms, surrounded by my friends.
Superjail! (2008 - 2014)
I can honestly say that they are all special in one way or another and that none of them have disappointed me yet. Last season there was definitely one or two that could have worked better…but there is a schedule, and at a certain point, you have to show it the door.
Stephen Warbrick, on the stories for season 3.
Adult Swim's Standards and Practices
Christy Karacas: We’ve gotten very little notes from the network this season, which has been awesome. I’m more surprised about the stuff we don’t get notes on. They also seem more worried about sexual things than violence, which always amazes me.
Stephen Warbrick: The network has been very lenient with what we can/can’t do. I am always equally surprised by what is a no and what slides through. I know that pubic hair and cannibalism are always a no.
He seems like the most sane character, but if you look at the different levels of his character, he's pretty much the most troubled.
Stephen Warbrick, about Jared (in a pre-season 1 interview)
Tattoos and gay inmates
Christy Karacas: I can't- I can't believe this shower scene-
Stephen Warbrick: -I can't either-
Karacas: -is not censored.
Aaron Augenblick: Coming up with new tattoos is another thing that we try to do. We do a lot of research in like tattoos and-
Karacas: -there's some crazy-
Augenblick: -there's really insane, amazing things people put on their bodies, especially in prison. Filling inmates with tattoos is a real challenge.
Warbrick: Is that the first time we see these two dudes? The gay inmates?
Augenblick: Yeah, think so. That's the first appearance of the gay inmates.
Karacas: They become pretty, uh- they're almost in every episode, I think.
Augenblick: Just about, yeah.
Karacas: And they're Steve and Chris, their voices.
Analysis of Alice
Christy Karacas: Yeah, Alice is kind of like the- like, you know, she obviously used to be a man. Or is a man or, you're not sure.
Aaron Augenblick: And Christy's the voice of Alice, so he would know.
Stephen Warbrick: Only he knows the actual truth of what's going on down there.
Karacas: I think she's like, inbetween.
Warbrick: Inbetween what, though?
Karacas: She like, she like, you know, she thinks she's a sexy woman, she wants to be seen as a sexy woman. But she's kind of like this...she's just really nasty. And like, I don't know, Alice is weird. Alice is like, everything about Alice seems like crappy, but she's super-likeable for some reason. 'Cause she's really like a bully, she messes with all the inmates, she's sadistic. She's always like, messing with them and getting off on it. I mean, she's kind of like a horrible person. For some reason, I always feel like, I don't know if it's bias-
Warbrick: -and she's really strong.
Karacas: Yeah, she kind of saves the day a couple of times. Kind of fun.
Warbrick: She's got big boobs too.
