The Night Garden, stephen paul
Oil on Linen. An abstract of a garden at night. This is one of a series of paintings that I completed in Antibes before reworking it in Bargemon. It has many layers that have been sanded at times throughout the development of the painting. It began as a straight abstract and grew into this semi-representational painting of the mysteries of garden life at night.

Finch, stephen paul
Another in the series of birds. I am working with these charming little creatures as an almost abstract element in each composition but definitely profiting from the sentiment that they inspire. When I lived in the mountains in the Sierra Nevada I met one of these birds that I will not forget. I was sitting by a mountain lake in the sunshine when I noticed a large log bobbing just offshore. A small bird appeared on the log and stared at me until he was sure that he had my attention. Then he began to sing.

Still Life, stephen paul
IRIS has developed over a few years. After arriving in France my aesthetic was shaken up quite a bit and I began to feel pressure to change the language in which I was painting. After a number of years things seem to have relaxed and elements of abstract paintings such as IRIS are falling into place much more naturally. There are many layers to this painting, exposed in different areas and to different levels but the finished piece is a celebration of the rediscovering of my voice.

This is a painting of a storm approaching a field close to the Mediterranean in Frejus. My goal was to make it as liquid as possible while holding on to the vibrancy of the menacing clouds above the summer fields.
