In honor of Hugh Masekela’s passing. This is Zaire 74. It “was the three day music festival that proceeded the Heavyweight Championship fight between Mohammed Ali & George Foreman that took place in the autumn of 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire. The festival brought together an array of America’s greatest musical artists performing on the same stage alongside the greatest African artists of that time from the Congo and beyond. Many of these performances of this this event are included in the 1996 Academy Award winning documentary feature ‘When We Were Kings.’ Sadly the African artists, with the exception of Miriam Makeba are for the most part neglected. Contained in this package are NEVER BEFORE HEARD RECORDINGS OF THE AFRICAN ARTISTS that appeared at this historic event. It features amazing vibrant performances by the most iconic figures of the ‘golden age’ of the music of the Congo, appearing in front of an adoring audience of more than 50 thousand fans. Complete sets by: Franco and O.K. Jazz, Tabu Ley Rochereau and Afrisa, Abeti Masikini, Abumba Masikini and Band, Orchestre Stukas and Pemba Dance Troupe. Also featured is a magical set by the great Miriam Makeba performing at the very height of her extraordinary powers.
