One type of stock character you like, and one type of stock character you hate!
This has been a really hard one because there are SO MANY stock characters and they are so easy to ignore because they are basically just there.
However, I particularly hate when they have a "cute kid" type character that only exists to say saccharine bullshit and call out the MCs for being in love or whatever, then the rest of the time they are magically off at preschool or grandma's. Bonus points if they behave in an utterly age inappropriate way. I can stomach it if the kid is a niece or nephew who reasonably would not be around very often, but not if they're supposed to be one of the MCs' actual child. I don't know. It is just a huge pet peeve of mine. Write kids like actual people. Jesus Christ.
As for a type I like, I'm going to have to go with any kind that is cranky. I don't mean like they are antagonistic, I just mean that they are in a bad mood. Like a crotchety old man who just wants to be left alone or a sullen goth girl who thinks everything is stupid.
This is what I find so infuriating about Rowling. Her characters are all in theory quite interesting. The actual description of Voldemort is a fantastic, interesting character. He's an orphan, corrupted by power he didn't understand, and ultimately driven by a horrible fear of death, unable to understand human affection he isolates himself from the world and that ultimately leads to his downfall. In practice, though, he's just Stock Dark Lord Number Five. Even though he is obsessed with immortality, and utterly terrified of dying, he treats his Horcruxes with blithe disregard. Even though he is supposedly incapable of trusting anybody he works with legions of incompetent minions and actually does trust them with important tasks, usually to his detriment. All the mistakes Voldemort makes which Rowling pretends are his "arrogance" or "cruelty" or whatever are actually just plot necessitated stupidity.

OK Special Effects is such a fun movie. The New York locations are great, and the apartment sets are terrific. But so far, what I love the most is the cab driver who picks up the murder victim's husband who's running from the cops. The husband says he's going "sightseeing" after running out of an apartment on Bleecker Street. The cab driver asks him if he wants to go find a hooker, also that he could almost certainly find sex for free. Husband says, "No girls." So the cab driver says, "You want me to drop you off at a gay bar? No judgment." Husband says no. He wants to find the notorious filmmaker's place. The cab driver CALLS DISPATCH to find out where the guy's apartment is. Then he asks, "You sure you don't want me to drop you off to see some female impersonators? There's a great fan dance show."
Bless the old school cab driver, stock character of all time.
Darth Vader as a femme fatale is this anything????
Like I know this kinda contradicts my usual interpretation of him as (among other things) a Gothic villain but like. Sit in the black hole at the center of your galaxy brain and think about it for a second.
