i thought i had already done a translation of “stofnar falla” but i cant find it anymore so im doing it again, it’s a poem by Örn Arnarson (Magnús Stefánsson) but i know it through the song by samaris.
Stofnar falla
Stráin sölna. Stofnar falla. Stormur dauðans næðir alla. Ljóselskandi, langanþrungið lífið fyllir öll þau skörð, sækir fram í sigurvissu. Svo er strítt um alla jörð.
Stríðsmenn falla. Hetjur hníga. Hjaðningum er stefnt til víga. Aldrei verður sæst á sakir. Sækja og verjast herjum tveim sólskinsbörn og synir skuggans. Svo er strítt um allan heim.
Tefld er drápskák tveggja herja, tvíefld sókn og reynt að verja. Öllu tjaldað: erfðaheimsku, afturhaldi, þræladygð móti þroskans sókn til sigurs. Svo er strítt um alla byggð.
Fallinn er hann Fjögramaki, fyrr sem lyfti Grettistaki. Þó að hetja hnigi í valinn, hefjum merkið fram skal stefnt. Syrgjum ei, en söfnum liði. Svo skal góðra drengja hefnt.
nations fall
the grass withers, nations fall. a storm of death blows down all lightloving, the long and full ? life fills all clefts stride forth with confidence of victory. so is fought everywhere on earth
fighters fall, heroes sink down, hjaðnings* are called to battle never will affairs be settled. attack and fend two armies children of sunshine and sons of the shadow. so is fought around the world
play suicide chess of two armies, a strong attack tried to fend all be covered by a curtain: inherited stupidity, reaction, slave-loyalty against maturity, attack to victory. so is fought about the whole settlement
fallen is the husband of four before he lifted gettis rock though heroes sink to the fallen, we hold up the signal, forward shall we steer mourn not, but concentrate troops. so shall the good boys be revenged
