Solution - Driver compatibility for Windows 7 - Mustek 1200UB Plus
Mustek 1200 UB Plus
Almost a year ago I bought this scanner from second-hand. At the beginning I used Windows XP on my PC, and the driver worked properly. After a few months I switched my OS to Windows 7. Everything was fine, except the scanner's driver. Now I know what should I do.
Let's see:
"Compatibility". It was always a craziest way. If you want to install the drivers with the setup utility, you get this error message:
Solution:
Every version of Windows has a registry database. The OS stores a lot of settings of itself and softwares(utilities, games, etc.) for proper working. For a simplified example: "what are you", "what's your version number", "where is your location on your hard drive", etc. This is the place what we looking for. To run the registry editor, we must open start menu, then type here the following:
Type the following: "regedit" then hit enter.
The registry editor's main window pops up.
In this utility, you must find this path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
When you done with the path-finding, look for the following line on the left side of registry editor:
Double click on "ProductName" to edit this line. You will get this window. You must change the text in the second text-box (named "Value data" on english Windows 7).
Important! In my case it contains the following text: "Windows 7 Home Premium". If you use another "type" of Windows 7 (Ultimate, business, etc.) you must save your own "Value data" to somewhere else (for backup purposes), like notepad text file.
Change the Value data to the following: "Microsoft Windows XP". Then press OK.
Remember, after this driver-procedure, it is recommended to change back the "ProductName" value data to it's original value (in my case: Windows 7 Home Premium). Now you can close the Registry editor.
Let's try to run that driver setup again.
.Cilck here to see a little video of the setup procedure.
With the original driver settings, you can use the scanner's classic TWAIN driver too. It is more comfortable to use and there's a lot more settings you can configure than the Windows 7's scanner-utility.
Remember to change the "ProductName" value data to it's original state!
I hope this solution works for everybody :) this is a pretty good scanner, and I don't want to buy a brand new one just for this.
That's all!
