A HEARTBREAKING TEXT.

raven’s going to be pissed, ed reasons when he finishes packing up all of his belongings. his room has been reduced to a pile of cardboard boxes, a carcass of the place he had lived in for most of his college life. it feels very lonely. this feels very lonely. ed stands in the doorway, eyes tracing over where he had kept his desk, his bed, his bookshelf, his gaming console. but of course there’s nothing to look at. just a sea of boring boxes.

he had been too scared to bring it up to her. alphonse’s condition had taken a turn for the worst and he needed to be moved to another hospital; one in another state, clear across the country. of course. because the moment a place starts to feel like home, it gets ripped out from underneath him. it had been stupid for ed to expect this time would be different.

but that’s not alphonse’s fault.

ed pinches the bridge of his nose and takes in a deep breath when one of the moving guys knocks on the door behind him to alert him of his presence. startled, ed moves to the side and lets him come in, effortlessly scooping up some of the heavier boxes in his giant arms before turning to go load it into the moving truck downstairs.

he takes out his phone, fingers pausing above the touchscreen.

TO: Rae 2:11 PM     hey so i didn’t really know how to bring this up but uh...i’m moving out. today. sorry. al’s condition got worse. they’re moving him to a hospital on the other side of the country, with really good doctors who can keep an eye on him better than they’re doing here. sorry i didn’t tell you.

    thanks for everything. i know you’re gonna be angry and honestly i don’t blame you. you know i suck at talking about things. haha

ed talks. a lot. and drunk ed talks even more than that. it’s impressive, really, the rapid firing of neurons that goes on within the older elric’s brain, the fact that there’s no shortage of thoughts.

he’s very fucked up at the moment--being 5′4″ and mostly muscle thanks to his martial arts experience means alcohol grabs a hold of his bloodstream faster than he expects. and he’s at a frat party, which is boring, but had also meant free booze, but no one cares to hear about ed’s drunken ramblings about biochemistry or physics. so for the first time in his life, ed is quiet, shoulders slouching in the corner, composing a very important message to vy. and it’s not like vy will care about his opinions on schrodinger’s cat either, but realistically they’re also probably getting equally-fucked up somewhere else, so whatever. they could deal.

Miyao and Ed are similar enough that being around the red-head can either infuriate or calm him. That said, it isn’t often Gauntlet Knights get to be around one another, so Ed is relishing in being able to talk to someone so like him.

Miyao is telling a joke.

Ed’s expression falls into a large and overbearing grin too wide for his face and dimpling his cheeks, the skin by his eyes wrinkling. Above them the sun is hot and heavy. Edward barely notices it and a laugh erupts past his lips and filling the dense air as a cloud would--he is not meant to be small and unnoticeable. The cityscape stretches before them, a mottled layer of bricks, windows, and lights, stretching out beyond the horizon. The auditory ads sound muffled from this far away; it doesn’t matter, anyways. Right now it’s just the two of them, hanging out and being teens--right now, they are not soldiers. Just boys.

The laugh fades out. Ed, still beaming, leans back on his hands. “Geez, Miyao,” he says, voice playful, “That joke sucked. Where’d you hear it--Jayden?” His laugh clearly says otherwise; Ed thought the joke was rather good, but he’s curious to hear more about his fellow AOU pilots.

Not one to mask his features, displeasure seeps into the corners of Ed’s mouth, an irritated set of the brow firmly taking hold in his forehead. He leans back on a heel, hands disappearing into the deep set of his jacket pockets, letting the--what is Noctus supposed to BE, anyways? Chimera? Maybe. Whatever. Ed’ll think on it later.

“Okay, first off, you’re wrong.” That’s out of the way. “Second off, just ‘cause you don’t understand somethin’ doesn’t mean there aren’t principles and a science behind it.” Ed jabs the air sharply with a finger, then two, to accentuate his point. Even the rules behind alchemy can be broken--Scar is proof of that. The homunculi are proof of that.

“For an ‘alchemist’ you’re awfully close-minded,” Ed says with a shrug of his shoulders, but his eyes brim more good-naturedly with this comment. “Where are you even from?” Xing’s alkahestry is different from Amestrian alchemy in almost every single possible way, but they were still derivative of the same thing...perhaps Noctus’s alchemy is the same way.

And maybe it’ll get Ed closer to the Philosopher’s Stone.

"How do you... " She struggles for words, brows furrowing. Her hands curl together before her chest, some remnant of a smaller, shyer version of herself. "How do you stop thinking of -- people as threats? It makes me -- it makes me feel like Xemnas. Like I'm not thinking of people as people. I don't... I don't want to be like that, but I don't know how to stop being afraid."

He taps his pen against the edge of his desk, stirring Xion’s thoughts in his mind. How do you stop thinking of people as threats? and more importantly; how do I stop feeling like a monster?

It’s a very different response to trauma from the one Ed’s been forced to deal with. And how to answer – ? “People who are abused are conditioned to see everything they do as being wrong,” he tries, but it’s not like he’s a social worker or a therapist or even an adult, he’s 17 and all of his knowledge comes from the books he’s read. Not exactly implementable material. “Um…basically I’m just sayin’ is that it’s normal for you to feel like you’re doing everything wrong. But you’re not. You’re just scared.”

He offers her a wobbly but consoling smile. “People hurt ya, Xion. It’s not your fault you’re so scared all the time. Of them. Of yourself. Be nicer to yourself, okay?”
