I usually stick to sharing photos of wildlife and nature here—but every now and then it feels right to show something else. These are a few glimpses from the older parts of Storfors, the small municipality in Värmland where I live. You’ll still spot a bit of nature in these photos, of course—it’s hard not to, with forests and lakes never far away.
Storfors is a quiet place, surrounded by deep woods and dotted with lakes and streams. It’s part of the historical province of Värmland, and while it’s small in terms of population, it covers a fairly large area. The name “Storfors” means “big rapids,” though exactly which rapids gave the place its name is a bit unclear. And to be honest—none of them are particularly big.
The rapids and waterways (big or small) weren’t just scenic—they were practical, too. The abundance of flowing water made this a good place for ironworks back in the 1600s. Water transport, along with access to forests for charcoal and nearby iron ore, helped shape the area’s industrial history. Remnants of that era are still visible today, especially around the old ironworks sites.
Like many places in the region, Storfors has a history shaped by both industry and quiet rural life—red cottages, winding roads, and nature always just a few steps away.
