“Why don’t you ever come down from that rock?” Niall suddenly asks, staring curiously up at Harry. “I’d like to know what the bottom half of you looks like.” A few seconds later his eyes widen and he breaks into nervous laughter. “That didn't come out right, sorry. You don’t have to, I just haven’t gone this long without seeing someone’s entire body.” He laughs again, shaking his head. “You know what, I’m just gonna stop talking.”

“Why?” Harry finds himself asking. “I like it when you talk.”

“What?” Niall splutters, nearly spitting his coffee all over his mother’s face. “Meet me?”

Maura nods, grabbing a napkin to wipe away the bit of coffee that’s dribbled down his chin. “I showed him your picture and he said you were cute, so I gave him your number.”

“Mum, you can’t just go around giving my number to strangers!” Niall hisses, trying to keep his voice low enough so he doesn’t draw any attention to himself.

“Then why are you smiling? Your house almost burnt down.”

“First of all, it was just a grease fire,” Harry points out, “and second of all, I can smile whenever I want. Maybe I’m just happy my house didn’t burn down.”

Louis shakes his head disbelievingly. “No, it’s something else, and I’m not leaving until you tell me.”

“It’s nothing, Louis,” Harry says as seriously as he can, but if he were Louis he wouldn’t buy it either. Louis gives him a look and Harry hates how that’s all it takes to break him. “Fine, there was this firefighter and maybe I thought he was cute,” he admits, trying to avoid eye contact with Louis and the smirk on his face.

Or, Niall’s a firefighter and Harry’s always finding himself in trouble.

“Harry,” Louis says, placing a hand on Harry's shoulder, “have you ever stopped to think that maybe you hate him so much because you actually like him?”

Harry nearly chokes on his beer as he sends Louis an offended look. “You're mental,” he says, nudging Louis’ hand off of his shoulder and turning away from him because that's the most absurd thing he's ever heard. He almost wants to laugh.

Or, Niall and Harry each own rival record labels, and they hate each other. Until they don't.
