Lunch Time. One of the only breaks that highschoolers get these days. Now, for many kids it is a time to relax, eat something and talk to their friends about something stupid. Chrissy however, couldn’t really do that. 

She always felt pressured when eating, since her mother’s comments about what she ate always got to her. Feeling forced to puke up everything she ate really took a toll on not just her physical health, but her mental health too. Her friends at school weren’t much help either. Highschoolers these days are all obsessed with popularity, and being pretty. For a lot of them, being pretty meant being skinny. That only gave Chrissy more pressure when eating. She felt as if eating anything around anyone would result in the same judgemental comments. “You’re really eating that?” and, “That’s a lot of food” When in reality what she ate was barely a meal. The non-stop comments from her classmates made it hard for her to keep anything down, and she ended up throwing everything up, regardless of how much she had eaten. Even if she hadn’t eaten anything at all. 

Sitting with the rest of the cheerleaders was difficult for her, which was why she had been avoiding them. When she first started this, she met the only person she considered a real friend. M/n. He had been in her English class in their freshman year, although they never really talked. Until senior year anyway. M/n wasn’t necessarily ‘popular’, but he got along with everyone. Even so, he preferred solitude, often hiding behind the bleachers at lunch to avoid human contact. 

Chrissy trusted him with everything, even when he had the ability to tell everyone. But he didn’t. He had no need to, and she was grateful for it. 

“Chris, are you okay?” He called from where he sat in front of her, effectively snapping her out of her thoughts. M/n smiled when he noticed that Chrissy was now looking at him instead of through him. “Something the matter?” M/n asked, and Chrissy sighed anxiously as she decided how to answer.

She felt safe with M/n, more than anyone else anyway. Though, if she wasn’t okay, she should tell him. That was what she was told the most during their short friendship. That he was always there for her, to listen and to support her. “Lunch is getting harder for me” She admitted, and M/n nodded to show that he understood. 

“It’s okay, take as much time as you need. I’m here for you” He said, and his attempts at reassurance made Chrissy smile, glancing down at the lunch he had made for her. The same pink and green lunchbox he had presented her with after she mentioned that she liked a certain food. He arrived the next day with the box filled with foods she had mentioned she liked. The first time he had given her lunch, she was surprised that he would go to so much trouble. Though, even with how much time he took to make it, she just couldn’t do it. She couldn't keep it down.

“Chrissy” She heard M/n call again, and she tilted her head up to look into his eyes again, realising that she had been focusing on her thoughts again. 

“Sorry…I was just thinking” She answered, and the sound of a chuckle from the boy in front of her made her relax a little. The look on his face looked like it was questioning her, asking what she was thinking about, and he was. He was wondering whether what she was thinking was upsetting her, and it really seemed to be. Her head began to throb as she tried to recall what she was actually thinking about, but she struggled to recall any of the good parts of the memory, just the difficult parts. 

Her eyes began to well up with tears as she thought, before they started rolling down her cheeks. She covered her face with her hands, recoiling into herself as she sniffled and spluttered, attempting to shield her tears from him.

M/n took the chance to pull her into his chest, moving the lunchboxes out of the way so that they wouldn’t be knocked over. Her tears started to soak his shirt as she leant into him, and he ran his hands through her hair in an attempt to comfort her. It seemed to work for a bit, helping to calm her down from the manic spluttered and pained chokes from her tears. Although it helped, she never stopped crying. 

After a few moments, she muttered some small words into the fabric of his shirt, “I just…I can’t do it” M/n gently shushed her as her voice began to crack, whispering some comforting words into her ear as he cautiously kissed the top of her head. 

“It’s okay, it’s okay…” He responded, in a hushed tone so that she didn’t think that he was yelling at her. She nodded slightly against his chest, and the two stayed like that for a while, not really saying or doing much other than keeping each other company. When it came to the end of lunch, Chrissy refused to move. M/n silently accepted his fate of numb legs - which he didn’t mind - and the two stayed there until Chrissy had the energy to stand up. 

“Want me to take you home?” M/n eventually asked, wrapping his jacket around the cheerleader's shoulders, before going to pack the abandoned lunchboxes away. Chrissy ended up shaking her head at the question, not really liking the idea of going back home to her mother. M/n’s face held a look of sympathy for his friend, but nodded in understanding. “My place then?” He asked, changing up the question to see what she would say. 

The grin that dawned her face as she agreed made him chuckle. Chrissy liked his house. It was warm, and cozy, and he had hamsters that she enjoyed playing with when she visited. It was much better than her home, even down to the pillow fort he had never taken down since the two of them had built it. A constant shade of home that felt so much nicer than the dark, depressing walls of her own room. 

“Yeah, we can rent a movie too?” She suggested, and he grinned at the idea, picking up her bag and offering to carry it for her as they walked to his car. 

“What movie?” He asked, and she thought for a moment, before giving him her answer.

“Back to the future?”

Beautiful Girl

Chrissy Cunningham and I have been best friends since middle school. We have always told each other everything. I think that may be why I have always admired her so much.

She has always been the toughest girl I know from dealing with her Mom always judging her harshly to dealing with her Dad not giving a crap. Even though she has all this stuff going on at home she is amazing at school she helps me with my homework more than I would like to admit. Do not even get me started on how good at cheering she is! She never misses a practice.

I love her for many more reasons but I could not list them all or I would be talking forever. Of course, I would never tell her that because she is my best friend and I could never lose her. I am so glad I came up with an excuse for why I was acting differently when she started dating that dumb jock. 

I tried to accept Jason because Chrissy liked him but he was such a jerk to everyone including Chrissy he was always ditching her. She deserves so much better! Of course, it is fine if Chrissy does not want me I just want Chrissy to be happy!

I was watching Chrissy’s practice as always when she runs up to me.

“Did you like the new routine I helped choreograph!” She smiles brightly.

“It was great! How did you come with the-” I was quickly cut off by Jason putting his arm around Chrissy.

“Is this dude bothering you,” he laughs out.

I frown as Chrissy pushes him away and laughs “Come on you know he is my best friend.”

Jason waves her off, “Yeah yeah. What do you say tonight after the game we go out together with the team.”

Chrissy nods happily and I have to remind myself that I am happy for her. As long as she is happy I am happy.

“See you at the game Chrissy,” I say waving and walking away.

Later that night I just could not bring myself to go to that game. I felt SO guilty ditching Chrissy like that, but I just could not stand seeing Jason show Chrissy off to his teammates like she is some prize he won. 

I spent most of the night moping in my bed and trying to catch up on the homework that I had been struggling with. Weirdly my Mom shouts my name and that Chrissy is on the phone. That is strange that she would call so late when she is supposed to be out with Jason.

I quickly run downstairs to answer the phone, “Hey Chrissy what’s going on?” I asked a little concerned.

I can hear Chrissy Stifle her tears “I am really sorry to ask you this so late but could you pick me up?”

I could tell immediately by the tone of Chrissy’s voice that it was urgent. “Of course where are you?”

I quickly rush to some payphone in the middle of nowhere in my rusty used car. I find Chrissy fast (I may have been speeding) she is in her cheer uniform standing by the payphone. She is soaked I wonder how long she has been in the rain and how she got here.

Chrissy runs to my car and we sit in silence for a few minutes just the rain pounding on my car filling the silence. 

“So... what were you doing in the middle of nowhere?” I asked unsure if I should.

Silent tears fall down Chrissy's face as she tries to stutter out “One of the team members said I look like I gained weight then the whole team started to join in even Jason joined in.”

That made me extremely mad that they would do that to her I mean I thought Jason was a jerk but now I think he is a straight-up Asshole! 

Chrissy wipes her tears “I mean I guess it is okay he didn't know that my Mom is very particular about my weight.”

“Chrissy it is never okay for ANYONE to say that type of stuff to you, not even your Mom or Jason. I have to tell you this I always thought u were the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. From the first day we met in middle school and no one would sit with me at lunch because I was new and you marched on over from where the other cheerleaders were sitting and said I am your friend now.” I said determined to make her know she is the kindest most beautiful girl I’ve met.

“Is that true that you think that about me?” She stumbles out.

I cradle her face, “Of course it is Chrissy”

You stared at the full-body mirror with a frown. You hated the way your body looked.

With a sigh, you put on your clothing and walked out of your room, curling up on your couch with a bunch of covers and getting ready to sleep through your hunger.

Chrissy unlocked the door with the spare key you gave her, she was very worried about you but you wouldn't tell her anything. You hadn't been to school in a while and always seemed gloomy, she hadn't seen you in more than a week. When she went in your living-room, she was greeted by the sight of you sleeping. She smiled sweetly and tucked you in further when she paused. You were pale. Like very pale, and when did you get so fragile? She connected the dots, eyes widening and a gasp emitting from her, causing you to stir awake.

“Chrissy?” You mumbled sleepily as she brought you into a warm embrace, feeling her tears wetting the fabric on your shoulder.

She understands. She knows what its like to not like the way you look. She knows it all.

“im so sorry” she sobbed into your shoulder. You felt tears prick at the back of your eyes from seeing her like this, slightly understanding that she now knew about your situation.

Once you both stopped sobbing into each others arms, you calmed down a bit “is there anything i can do to help?” Chrissy sniffled

“lets just.. get through this. Together.”

“Together.”
