Vetica could feel her heart speed off at a million miles per minute when she heard his name.
“Yeah, she said it was that former warlord, Jinbe…”
It took all her strength not to grab the informant’s collar and demand more information, any type of confirmation.
Vetica seized her bag and notebook and tore off for the harbor. She had hardly believed the news when she heard that Jinbe had joined the strawhat crew, but now for him to be here, on the same island as her, it was a reporter’s dream-come-true.
Once she arrived at the docks, her eyebrows knit: it was so crowded. However, even then, among the crowd, it was not hard to spot the whale-shark fishman. His black, silver streaked hair and blue skin were dead giveaways. She attempted to push her way through the crowd but by the time she had made it to the front he had somehow slipped away.
In the distance she could see the top of a frizzy bun making its way towards the market side of town. Vetica swore and once again began pressing her way towards him. He was purchasing a newspaper in a secluded area of the market when she finally caught up with him. Just as he began to pass her she thrust her arm out to block his path.
“Wait!” She exclaimed, eliciting a wary look from the fishman. Vetica lifted her notebook for him to see. “Sorry- I was just wondering if I could ask you a couple of questions about Luffy.”
Jinbe’s expression changed to one of surprise. “You want to ask me about Luffy?”
Vetica smiled and nodded. “Yes, if that’s alright with you.”
Jinbe seemed to think over this for a second before smiling like a proud father. “Sure.”
Vetica gestured towards a nearby restaurant and the large fishman nodded before making his way there with her.
“Oh!” Vetica exclaimed as they walked. “And I also want to know all about your time with the straw hats!” She cleared her throat, as she realized she was getting overly excited. “I mean… if that’s okay with you.”
Jinbe chuckled. “Well that could take a while…”
As they entered the restaurant, they were greeted by a very nervous looking host. One could visibly see the sweat pouring down his pink neck. He barely could even choke out a proper “hello.”
Vetica ignored his ridiculous behavior and simply held up two fingers, to which the young man respond by holding out a shaky hand towards an empty table. Vetica patted him on shoulder.
“And we’ll need a bottle of your best sake,” she whispered.
She silenced him with a finger. It did not matter if she went broke; it was worth it to impress any member of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew. She nodded to Jinbe and sat down. He sat down across from her. She readied her pencil and paper.
“So when did you first meet Monkey D. Luffy?”
“We first met-“ he stopped, as a large bottle of sake and set of glasses were placed on the table. He looked from the glasses to her and grinned. Gracefully, he poured himself a cup and drank. The muscles in his forehead seemed to relax. He then focused his gaze on her. “We first met when I was imprisoned in Impel Down… However, before that I had heard many stories about him from his brother… Ace.”
Jinbe’s expression was solemn, but Vetica couldn’t stop herself from audibly gasping.
“You mean Luffy and Portgas D. Ace are related?”
“Not by blood, but they might as well have been,” he chuckled, taking another drink. “From what Ace told me, they certainly got into a lot of misadventures…”
His wise eyes seemed to study her for a second before he continued. “Would you like to hear some of them?”
The smile on her face grew so wide, it felt like Vetica’s cheeks were going to burst.
“Yes!… Tell me everything.”
