For the ballet ask - La Sylphide, Bolero (Béjart), Alice's adventures in Wonderland (Wheeldon) and Le jeune homme et la mort...
Oooooo these are interesting!
Boring: La Sylphide. This entire ballet puts me to sleep, I’ve tried watching so many different casts and productions and just…ugh. The closest I’ve come to being entertained was watching Vyacheslav Lopatin as James, but even then I can’t even watch the entire pas de deux. I understand it’s so historically significant and a huge deal, but oh my god. The only ballet I find more boring is Chopiniana.
Great: Bolero. The first time I watched it was the Plisetskaya version and honestly I was confused about why people thought it was great, but I felt compelled to watch it again and then every time and with every new dancer I saw different layers and holy shit it’s so good. I would kill to see it in person with Diana Vishneva. I also think that Ekaterina Shipulina would be amazing in it because she is so good at just pure dance; she doesn’t need a story to be great.
Terrible: Alice’s Adventure’s in Wonderland. Literally the only thing that saves this ballet from completely crashing and burning are the Mad Hatter and the Tart Adagio. The rest of it is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring, oh my god.
Want To See: Je Jeune Homme et La Mort. I find this ballet so interesting and stunning and challenging to the viewer. My favorite performance I’ve found on YouTube is Kimin Kim. Kimin is AMAZING because he uses every single prop on stage to tell part of the story; he grasps and pushes and leans on them in an effort to keep himself grounded, on earth, alive, and yet still ends up pushing them away one by one. He stands up to the Girl and consistently tries to show her that he’s still alive and can resist, but eventually he succumbs to her. I love that you can see the final string snaps at the cigarette lighting, normally dancers “break” after the blow job part, but Kimin was gone way before that, but then he comes back with one final push using the table before he is gone. And then when Kristina Shapran drops the chair in front of him, his reaction of fear/disbelief/dislike further drives home his madness. His use of the furniture seriously gives me chills; for whatever reason no other dancer’s interactions with those pieces impacts me in the same way. And after he dies when he’s standing with Death, he doesn’t have emotion, he isn’t there anymore, which I think is perfect. My favorite Girl is either Ekaterina Kondaurova or Viktoria Tereshkina; both of whom are absolutely amazing. I want to see Ekaterina Kondaurova with Andrey Ermakov who hasn’t danced it yet but I think he would be amazing. And I wish there was video of Tereshkina and Kim, they danced it together recently and I haven’t been able to find footage.
Kimin Kim and Kristina Shapran videos: part 1 and part 2
Viktoria Tereshkina and Alexander Sergeev (who is also brilliant): part 1 and part 2
Sorry, that was a total run on paragraph, but that ballet just gives me so many feelings!!!
