I have been asked to take pictures at my new job, something I knew was only a matter of time before it happened. Its like having a doctor or lawyer in the family, any professional really, someone to give "free" advice or creation on/to topics that generally cost a lot of money to seek answers about. As humans we always seem to take advantage of those in our inner circle who have professionally honed talents. And I should have seen this coming, truly, because the person who is my connection at my new job was one of my assignments. She was the subject of one of my former newspapers magazine covers, and I should have seen this coming.
When she asked me if I would take some pictures for a fold up brochure, I thought I would be okay with it. However since agreeing I've remembered with talent comes expectation, be that expectation solely perceived and not actual, I still can't handle how even the thought of not doing well will feel after this task is completed.
I am not comfortable and I don't like that old familiar darkness creeping back into my gut. I was always in knots over being a photojournalist. Constantly driving myself to create compelling photos; it upset my mental balance and started to wear on my body physically. This is one of the reasons why I quit being a photojournalist. This pride for my job coupled with the staff's lack of passion was a tipping point for me, and I was on the edge a long time before...something had to give. I didn't want to stop caring, but it was killing me, so I left.
I wouldn't say how I feel this morning is comprable to how I felt a couple months ago, but I am dreading today.
The worst part is my subject matter. You see, this brochure is about a bench. Yes, a park bench. And I couldn't convince them that this bench would look better with people on it...I suppose its the same at any job. Your boss thinks they know what they want, and because its their idea and they think they have some sort of talent to achieve their vision (a phrase I HATE by the way: "This is my vision"), this idea will magically become what they've got pictured in their mind. The reality is never as good as you can imagine it, because the real world and people/objects in the real world are held to the rules of reality.
It won't be for lack of trying or mental labor, but sometimes a bench is just a bench no matter who takes a photo of it.
I am going to have to live with that and so will they.
