Personal rant. Scroll on if you don't want to hear it.
Feeling endlessly frustrated today.
The company has come back and basically told the workers, take the deal on the table, or else each contract will get worse from here on out. It's a scare tactic. One they can use. And the federal mediator that had to come in just to help with all this, has advised everyone to take the deal. Six weeks of strike for pretty much nothing. Never mind that the media is saying it is an obvious win for the union. I don't think there is a single person on that line that considers what is happening a win. They fought for six weeks just to have to accept the same deal they shot down twice already.
So now, everyone is faced with two options. Take the crap deal or take a stand. If they take the deal, it's status quo as usual. If they take a stand, they are going to lose more. I think it's a personal decision for each family involved and I really don't think there is a right or wrong answer here.
Personally, I just kind of feel sad. Sad that we went through all this for nothing. Sad that my husband will be going back to work and the work days and independence I gained will now be gone. Sad that I am losing that independence in trade for him receiving just another bullshit deal. I'm sad that it is normal for husbands and wives not to see each other in order to make their careers work. I'm sad that we have to choose between making money or spending time with each other. Or, in my case, making money or spending time with my children. I'm just sad.
I hate how we have structured our world and I have no idea how to move away from that structure. I'm working on it. I'm contemplating even homeschooling my littles just to get away from the bullshit that is being played out in this forced idea of what family and work should look like.
Am I still an incredibly lucky individual? Of course I am. Do I hate that I also have to put that caveat in because someone out there who has been equally as hurt or hurt more is going to say "well at least you have xyz"? Yup. Look, we are all in this really odd place and if the "norm" of society works for you, I am happy for you. But it doesn't work for me and it just feels like if the norm doesn't work for you, the world around you gets about ten times harder to navigate.
Today just felt a bit more demoralizing than I had hoped for. But hey, at least if he goes back to work in the next few weeks, I can go buy myself a cup of coffee somewhere. Take my kids back to the bookstore for our family days. That is a silver lining at least.
