── while the establishment was more active than he’d usually prefer, kaiden figured a bit of liveliness couldn’t really hurt. it’d been a long and reclusive few days, withdrawing to pore over old spell books on the floor of his room, useless as it may have been ; he was sick of feeling like this. his apartment was too cold, his body too magic-worn sore, and he hadn’t slept well in the past few nights. he wanted something hot to drink, bitter and horribly strong. the company would just have to come with it.
he made his way to the end of the counter to wait for his coffee, hands in his pockets, a half awake kind of haze to his movements that nearly had him walk directly into someone else’s path. kaiden stepped back, glancing up to yank himself out of his own head, forced a presence. “ sorry. ” he shrugged over the apology quickly, looking to the other he’d cut off. “ are you waiting ? ”

Sebastian didn’t know who had told Dimitri about what had happened to him and Roman on the night of his birthday party, but when Sebastian had run into him, he’d had a look in his eyes like he wouldn’t be fooled by whatever excuses Sebastian was capable of producing. Dimitri was a high ranking member of Keket’s order after all, so it wouldn’t do well for Sebastian to underestimate her information network, though it was starting to feel like Romulus’s plan to keep this all hushed up was doomed to fail. Half the estate must have known by now. Sebastian could only imagine what they must think of the truce and its fragility. His engagement to Margaret had been meant to strengthen their ties, not sever them further.
A heavy sigh congealed in the air around Sebastian’s head, his breath rising and dissipating into the greying sky. It was cold enough still that he had to wear a coat, and bright enough that Dimitri was carrying a parasol. It looked flimsy, though Dimitri didn’t seem to mind the ever-looming threat of the sun as it started to sink. Still, Sebastian made sure to put himself always between it’s path and Dimitri.
They were walking along the river, away from where the tourists flocked, and Sebastian had been quiet, trying to pick his words carefully. “I’ve been wondering,” he finally started. “Do you like working under Keket? Is she… is she worthy of being followed?” Dimitri was nice, and Sebastian wanted more than anything to trust him, but he couldn’t let himself blindly rush into this.
