The pot edge was cool on her fingertips, but it didn’t help the roiling of her stomach. Arthur’s voice was muted through the thick, wooden door, but she heard him. His words. His tone. There’s a light hint of confusion. Daenerys doesn’t blame him, but that doesn’t stir anything within her to tell him why she can’t keep any food down. Why the smell of certain things sends her racing to the water closet. The queasiness had begun over a week prior, but she’d managed to keep it from him for there was no confusion in her mind what this was.
“I am in no danger!” Daenerys manages, scooping a handful of water from the nearby bowl to wash out her mouth. She wouldn’t put it past him to break the door down, danger or not. Her knight ached to make up for a perceived failing to protect her brother, Rhaegar, and Daenerys was never quite sure of his true affections. Oh, he was demonstrative, affectionate, almost loving, but only almost. He constantly declared himself too old, too ‘common’, to be anything more than her occasional lover.
Except he wasn’t. Daenerys didn’t lay with any other. Her free hand smoothed over her belly. Soon she would begin to show and there’d be no way to keep this from Arthur. Unless… They were leaving for Dragonstone in two days time. Sending him away would normally be next to impossible, but this presented an opportunity that he likely wouldn’t refuse - a chance to visit his homeland as her emissary. Dany stood slowly, willing her stomach to steady and, finally, she opened the door with flushed cheeks.
“A simple disagreement with my meal, certainly nothing which requires a knight’s attention,” she told him dryly, sweeping past him. Her heart ached in futility. He didn’t love her, he loved that he was serving Rhaegar’s sister. “As you are here, I have been pondering on who to send to Dorne on my behalf. No one is more suited to this task than you.”
