A prayer rule for busy times, by Seraphim of Sarov
THE PRAYER RULE OF ST SERAPHIM OF SAROV: Saint Seraphim of Sarov created a short prayer rule for those, who are busy and don’t have enough time to pray using the full morning or evening prayer rule.
He taught this rule to the sisters of the Diveyevo Convent and also to any other person that came to him for spiritual advice.St. Seraphim said:
”Let any Christian, upon arising from sleep stand before the holy icons, and read the Lord’s Prayer “Our Father” thrice, in honor of the Most-holy Trinity, then the hymn to the Theotokos “O Theotokos and Virgin, rejoice…” three times as well, and finally, the Symbol of Our Faith once.”
The saint also believed, that Christians must try to pray unceasingly, as it was said in the Bible: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
This is why he proposed, that during the day any Christian can repeat the short Jesus prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”At night, before going to bed, Christians may repeat the same praying rule:
1. “Our Father” (3 times)
2. “O Theotokos and Virgin, rejoice…” (3 times)
3. The Symbol of Our Faith (once).
Saint Seraphim explained why he chose these particular prayers for the rule: “The three prayers indicated are the foundation of Christianity. The first, as the payer given to us by Christ Himself, is the model for all prayers.
The second was brought from Heaven by the Archangel to greet the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Our Lord.
The Symbol of our faith contains in brief all of the salvific dogmas of the Christian Faith.
”To those who for whatever reason could not complete this little rule, Venerable St. Seraphim recommended reading it under whatever circumstance: during lessons, while walking, and even in bed. He based this advise on the words of the Scriptures: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
