Exquisite Corpse

A fun collaging exercise from our studio 1 practical class encouraging us to work collaboratively and practically with abstract and unconventional thinking which tied in well to this week’s lecture.

One of my favourite aspects about this course is that we get to play around with stuff like this because it forces us to look at things from a different perspective through a method that I wouldn’t trial in my spare time. I like that it helps in opening my eyes to the potential in any and every material for my projects.

Storyboarding!

Today I dot pointed a storyline for my tacit taste video and then illustrated it down into storyboards. A lot of it focuses on calming, domestic scenes which I found really soothing to draw and envision in my head.

We were encouraged to have a ‘climax’ in the video which I plan to capture at the very end. In the final scene, it will begin with the young main character eating the laksa, coming to a close up of the spoon in the bowl, panning along with it as it lifts up to her face. As spoon comes up to her mouth, the audience expecting to see the girl’s face will instead see an older version of herself to convey that the dish still remains to be something which she treasures and savours even after growing up.

I’m very aware of how long animating an entire video is going to take so I’ve also started painting up some of the backgrounds on photoshop so that I can start animating asap!

Food Festival Planning

In our Studio 1 practical class we ventured down to the Alumni Courtyard to begin planning for our week 13 event and to consider how to present our final videos. It began to rain while we were roaming around which became another factor for us to think through as we will be needing electrical equipment to display our work. Many of us also plan to incorporate audio into our videos which is an additional detail to evaluate in the lead up to the festival.

Moodboards + Tea

In Thursday’s class we introduced our ‘tacit tastes’ to everybody while sipping lemon and ginger tea (kindly brewed by Shayna 😋). The moodboard I presented featured my dad’s laksa - a dish that’s carries a lot of nostalgic meaning to me. I really want to make full use of the laksa’s warm, bright colour palette and tie this in with the similarly warm, loving memories I associate strongly with the dish.

tacit tastes

‘Tacit’ is the theme our studio 1 practical class is focusing on. Tacit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it down or verbalising it. It is much less certain and is more challenging to document or measure however, it can be seen as more valuable as it is not something that can be simply written down, it requires personal context and trust to share efficiently.
