Marcel Marceau in Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie", 1976
Photo from the spring of 1927 showing the marquee of Loew’s State Theater in Po’ Folk, Virginia, the lighted overhead sign proudly touting Flesh and the Gerbil (1926), starring John Gilbert and Greta Garbo.
For those unfamiliar with the rarely screened silent classic, Flesh and the Gerbil tells of the forbidden love between ship’s captain Antonio Flesh (Gilbert) and an Alaskan purse seiner known as The Gerbil (Garbo).
Also on the double bill, Once Upon A Time In… Culver City (1927), starring Baby Gruenwald as the city’s pioneering studio chief/gastropub owner.
